    Beach chalets which have fallen down a cliff on the Yorkshire coast are to be demolished more quickly than previously thought.

    The chalets in Scarborough's South Bay had been cordoned off following the collapse of a retaining wall in March this year, which left them leaning at a 45 degree angle.

    Consent to demolish them wasn't due to be granted until next year, but on Tuesday they collapsed further and now the council's chief executive has stepped in.

    Jim Dillon said: "The area's been visited by the council's consultant, who advised there is a steep section of ground above the path and, with further wet weather, this path could be at risk of collapse.

    "Given the current prevailing wet weather it is recommended to proceed with the demolition of the chalets immediately."

    Almost 90 free electric vehicle charge points are going to be installed across West Yorkshire.

    The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is putting them in at a cost of more than £3m.

    Each charging point will have two charging bays, one for taxis and private hire vehicles and the other for other users.

    They're expected to provide a full charge to an electric vehicle in around 30 minutes.

    Councillor Kim Groves, said: "Installing new charging points at these 88 sites, where people can charge their vehicles for free, is designed to encourage the transfer to electric vehicles.

    "Making half the bays for the use of taxis and private hire vehicles could result in up to 500 diesel vehicles being converted to hybrid and pure electric versions by 2020.

    "This would reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions from taxis by as much as 18%."

    The installation of the charging points is set to begin in 2019.

    Filming has started on the pilot episode for a new TV show in a North Yorkshire pub.

    Yorkshire-based comedy Northerners is being filmed at the Boy and Barrel pub in Selby by Leeds based production company Rossi Pictures.

    Producer Stewart Ross said the local community had been supportive of the show, which depicts pub life in York in the 1990s and 2000s.

    Thousands of people have signed a petition urging the Home Office to grant asylum to a Kurdish teenager.

    Hossein Ahmadi says because of his family's political beliefs he fears he will be "executed or imprisoned" if he is forced to return to Iran.

    However, he said the Home Office had rejected his application for asylum and told him it was safe for him to return.

    The Home Office said: "Individuals with ongoing asylum claims are not subject to removal action."

    A Wakefield man, recently released from prison, is wanted back there after failing to comply with his licence conditions, police say.

    The West Yorkshire force say they'd like to speak to anyone who has seen or has information about 28-year-old Gareth Paul Trevor.

    Det Insp Dave Bugg of Wakefield Police said: “Gareth Trevor is in breach of his prison licence and as a result he is wanted on recall.

    “We have a number of enquiries ongoing to find him and believe he is still in the Wakefield or Leeds areas."

    Two men have been charged after shots were fired at a house in South Yorkshire.

    Callum Huttom-Spigner, 24, of no fixed abode, and Camice Joseph Hayibor, 23, of Wembley, Middlesex, will appear before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court later.

    Police were called after a house on Regent Street, Balby, was shot at at about 23:30 on Friday 23 November.

    A window was damaged but nobody was injured.

    Callum Huttom-Spigner is charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a firearm without a certificate.

    Camice Joseph Hayibor is charged with possession of a bladed article.

    Three other people – a 21-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman – have been arrested in connection with the incident. They have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

  13. Watch: Changes to York's historic railway station reviewedpublished at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2018

    People's views about planned changes to York's historic railway station are being reviewed today.

    About 1,500 people gave feedback on a masterplan for the area, aimed at ensuring the station is a "fitting and prestigious" gateway into the city.

    The proposals would see some buildings and a road bridge demolished, new taxi ranks, expanded car parks and a new pedestrianised square.

    If councillors approve the scheme tonight, it's likely a planning application will be submitted soon.

    An East Yorkshire charity is hoping to provide hundreds of children in West Africa with solar charged lamps so they can do their homework.

    Burkina Faso has been trying to improve its education system, but many families have no electricity so children can't study at home.

    The Jacob's Well charity, based in Beverley, is raising money for reading lights which power up during the day and then shine at night.

    John Beynon, from the charity, said: "If you pass exams there that is your way out of poverty, if you have good qualifications you can go into the big cities and get a really decent job."

    Two West Yorkshire MPs have been questioning Theresa May as she has been giving evidence to the Commons Liaison Committee about Brexit.

    Leeds West Labour MP Rachael Reeves asked if the prime minister would "rule out the possibility" of leaving with no deal, saying "given what we know now...it would be so catastrophic."

    Theresa May replied that the planned vote in Parliament is on "whether to support, whether to ratify" the deal and that "if the House votes down that deal, there will be steps that are necessary".

    Rachael Reeves again asked: "If Parliament voted down the deal, would you really contemplate taking Britain out of the European Union without a deal?"

    The Prime Minister responded saying, "there is then a process" and the "timetable is such that some people would need to take practical steps".

    Castleford and Pontefract Labour MP Yvette Cooper accused her of squandering trust and "not being straight with people".

    In reply, Theresa May says the UK will have an "independent trade policy", and the EU has accepted this in the Brexit political declaration.

    She carried on until Yvette Cooper cut her off, saying she was "not adding anything".

  16. Fatal crash motorist had a 'medical episode'published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2018

    A motorist who died following a collision in East Yorkshire had a suspected medical episode at the wheel, police say.

    Matthew Smith died after the crash on Molescroft Road in Beverley, between the Molescroft roundabout and the York Road junction.

    No-one else was injured in the collision at about 10:00 on Tuesday.

    Police officers are supporting the family of 47-year-old Mr Smith, who was from North Cave.

    A bid for York to be one of the hosts of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup is being discussed in the city today.

    York is a "candidate city" in the bidding process.

    The council is being asked to contribute £200,000 towards the bid.

    But the bid wouldn't have even got to this stage if it wasn't for the new 8,000-seat Community Stadium, which is due to open next year.

    That's according to the Chairman of York City Knight's rugby league club, John Flatman, whos says: "If you're showcasing an event where the world's media will be interested you need a high quality facility."

    The stadium development has suffered a number of delays since it was first proposed in 2009.

    It's now due to open next year and will be the home of York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club.

    The company responsible for building the Hadfield wing at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital has apologised for the disruption, after concerns were raised over its fire safety.

    Patients from four wards have already been moved so that urgent repair work can be carried out on the walls.

    The wing was built under a Private Finance Initiative with a company called Kajima and opened in 2006.

    The company still has responsibility for the building.

    It says it will get the work done as quickly as possible, and is in discussion with the NHS to review all other sites where it's played a role, to ensure any similar risks are identified and dealt with

    A driver has been charged after a crash on the A63 which caused long delays on the roads around Hull last night.

    The 19-year-old had been stopped by police for the nature of his driving, when he sped off in his black VW Golf and collided with another car near St Andrews Quay at about 14:45.

    He then crashed again, near Melton, where he was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, failing to stop and possession of cannabis.

    Police said the driver was due to appear at Hull Magistrates' Court next month.

    New figures show there are more than 700 cases of domestic violence a month in the Wakefield district.

    It comes as Wakefield Council launches a 16 day campaign to encourage those in abusive relationships to leave., external

    In total there were more than 8,500 cases of domestic violence reported to police in one year, half of those were repeated incidents.

    The figures show more than one in four cases of domestic violence in the district happen in front of children.

    Money raised from the Free From Fear fundraising campaign, will be used to buy presents for children currently living in refuges.
