    Northern will run less than a third of its services on Saturdays in the run up to Christmas, with "very few" trains in the evening.

    Passengers in the north of England will face major disruption during the latest round of strikes on 8, 15, 22 and 29 December.

    One tweeted that the recent service offered by the operator had been "absolutely shambolic".

    RMT members are embroiled in a lengthy dispute about train guards.

    The Department for Transport (DfT) urged members to call off the "needless" industrial action.

    The announcement comes after Transport for the North urged the union and the rail operator to find a solution.

    Northern Powergrid said it was "monitoring the weather very closely" as high winds are expected today and tomorrow.

    Northern Powergrid's head of network operations, Rod Gardner, said: "We have extra engineers ready to restore power and carry out repairs if there is any disruption or damage to our network as a result of the forecast weather this evening and tomorrow."

    The UK Met Office has not named the weather event as a storm, but the Portuguese meteorological service has named it Storm Diana.

    These are the latest pictures from a lorry which overturned earlier on a slip road to the M1 near Ecclesfield in South Yorkshire.

    The HGV overturned on the roundabout at junction 35, there have been no reported injuries.

    The lorry has now been righted, but recovery and clean up is expected to take until about 17:00.

    South Yorkshire Police has advised drivers to avoid the area as we approach rush hour.

    Organisers of a popular scarecrow festival in North Yorkshire have decided to stop holding the event after 19 years.

    The organising committee of the Muston Scarecrow Festival say volunteer numbers have fallen and they don't want standards to fall.

    The committee said after consulting with residents, in the village near Filey, they've decided this year's festival would have to be the final one.

    A blue plaque could be put up on the childhood home of Harry Leslie Smith, who has died at the age of 95.

    The Barnsley-born campaigner and left-wing activist suffered suspected pneumonia while with his son John in Ontario.

    Known as the "world's oldest rebel", RAF veteran Mr Smith was born in Barnsley, but moved to Halifax in 1937, where he grew up.

    Labour councillors at Calderdale Council have paid tribute to him and are exploring the possibility of putting up a blue heritage plaque if they can pinpoint his childhood home in Boothtown, Halifax.

    The company responsible for building the Hadfield wing at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital has apologised for disruption after concerns were raised over its fire safety.

    Patients on four wards have already been moved so that urgent work can be carried out on the walls.

    It was built under a Private Finance Initiative with a company called Kajima, which still has responsibility for the building.

    It says it will get the work done as quickly as possible, and is in discussion with the NHS to review all other sites where the company has been involved to ensure any similar risks are identified and dealt with.

    West Yorkshire Police officers are trying to find a man who has breached his prison licence and is now wanted on recall to prison.

    Gareth Paul Trevor, 28, from Wakefield was recently released from prison but hasn't complied with his licence conditions, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Officers are trying to find him, saying he has links to Wakefield and Leeds.

    The death of a man who died after being Tasered by police was caused by cocaine toxicity and the stress of incident, an inquest jury has decided.

    Adrian McDonald, 34, had also been bitten by a police dog just before his arrest in December 2014 at a friend's flat in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

    Staffordshire Police had been called to "reports of an intruder" at the flat, but Mr McDonald, from Huddersfield, knew one of its occupants, the inquest was previously told.

    He admitted to police he had taken drugs and appeared to be breathing heavily as officers asked him to "calm down", the jury heard.

    Today they recorded a unanimous narrative verdict.

    Large projectors and speakers have gone up around Hull city centre as part of preparations for a large light display tomorrow night.

    The Urban Legends: Northern Lights event will include large projections on buildings around the city, and goes on until Sunday.

    The event, one of the biggest in Hull since the UK City of Culture year, will feature "captivating projections and atmospheric soundscapes", according to organisers.

    A school which closed this week after a suspected outbreak of the winter vomiting bug norovirus affected 50 of its staff and pupils will reopen tomorrow.

    Copmanthorpe Primary School in York was closed on Monday after consultation with Public Health England.

    A City of York Council spokeswoman, said: “A full deep clean of the school buildings and equipment has been carried out and the incubation period has now passed."

    Parents are being asked to make sure any infected children have been free of symptoms for 48 hours before returning to school.

    Two people have been arrested after a man was stabbed in Beverley this morning.

    Humberside Police arrested a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman on Watts Road at about 04:00.

    The pair remain in custody.

    The victim, who's in his 40s, is receiving hospital treatment for his injuries.

    Police described it as an isolated incident and that the individuals involved are known to each other.

  19. Call to end train misery after 37 days of strike actionpublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2018

    A call to end train misery in the north has been made by Transport for the North, a statutory transport body.

    It's appealed to both train-operator Northern and the RMT rail union to end the dispute centred around the introduction of driver-only trains.

    Last weekend saw the 37th day of strike action by RMT members.

    Transport for the North say it's concerned further industrial action planned in the run up to Christmas, "will add to the significant disruption rail passengers across the North of England continue to experience."

    In a statement, Transport for the North confirms it "does not support removing the second person from trains."

    It also says in helping promote further discussions between both parties it is "willing to consider all options that could lead to an agreement."

    The body's chief executive, Barry White, said: “Businesses across the North are reaching their busiest time of year and people want to enjoy all our economies have to offer, this is being hampered by uncertainty and disruption on the rail network.

    “We urge both parties to begin meaningful discussions as soon as possible."

    A man has had his van seized and been given 60 hours of unpaid community work after he dumped waste in Leeds on seven different occasions.

    David Falconer, of Nesfield Road, Belle Isle, pleaded guilty to all seven offences of fly-tipping when he appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court.

    He dumped a mixture of waste, including mattresses, doors and lawnmowers, throughout August this year, but was caught after Leeds City Council used CCTV to catch him.

    The council seized Mr Falconer’s van and returned it to the finance company to auction off.

    Councillor, Mohamed Rafique, said: “We simply will not tolerate fly-tipping in Leeds, and certainly not the extent of this case."
