    Beverley Art Gallery has acquired a new work by the town's most famous artist, Fred Elwell.

    The painting, depicting Fred's wife and fellow artist Mary working in her studio, will form part of a new exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery, opening on Saturday.

    The exhibition will mark the 60th anniversary of Fred Elwell's death and will contain an introductory panel by Professor Tim Barringer of Yale University.

    An armed robber who tried to steal cash from a shop in Bradford was chased off by the owner's dog, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    The man, who was armed with a hammer and wearing a skeleton mask, went into J&R Newsagents on Little Horton Lane and told the shopkeeper to hand over cash last Thursday.

    However, the shopkeeper's dog lunged at him and the robber left empty handed.

    A Sheffield snooker player and part-time builder is taking on a current snooker World Champion at a national competition later.

    Adam Duffy, 29, works for his dad in Sheffield, but is also pretty handy with a snooker cue.

    He became hooked on the game when watching the sport at the Crucible.

    He will play Mark Williams in the UK Snooker Championship at the Barbican Centre in York later.

    Practicing at the Star Snooker Academy, Adam can't see the fixture going to his head.

    "I've got to be my best to beat him", he said.

    "Win or lose, I'll be back to work on Friday."

    An overturned lorry has blocked an entry slip road for the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire.

    The HGV overturned on the roundabout at junction 35 near to Ecclesfield.

    South Yorkshire Police say there are no reported injuries.

    A disused warehouse in Driffield could be turned into a visitor centre after almost £10,000 of funding was secured.

    Plans for Mortimer's Warehouse, set beside the town's canal, moved a step closer after the Heritage Lottery Fund put almost £10,000 towards setting up a management board.

    Town councillor Mark Blakeston said the visitors centre would "exhibit artifacts associated with the canal and the agricultural heritage of Driffield," as well as containing shops and a cafe.

    A 16-year-old boy has been reported for summons for assault after a video showing a boy being attacked was shared on social media.

    The boy, 15, is shown being dragged to the floor at a school in Huddersfield before water is poured into his face.

    The video was filmed in a lunch break at Almondbury Community School on 25 October, police said.

    Police said the older boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear at Youth Court "in due course".

    In the footage a boy is grabbed by the throat, pulled to the ground and then has water poured in his face.

    The force initially said it was investigating the 25 October incident as a report of racially-aggravated assault.

    Kirklees Council said: "Neither us nor the school condone violence in any form and behaviour like this will not be tolerated."

    In a letter sent to parents, external, head teacher Trevor Bowen said: "The safety and welfare of our students is our number one priority and I can assure you that this situation is being taken extremely seriously."

    An online fundraising page set up to help the 15-year-old boy and his family has so far raised more than £50,000.

    The school was rated as "requiring improvement", external in its latest Ofsted report.

    CCTV images have been released after a pug was stolen from a garden in Sheffield.

    It happened at about 10:00 on Friday 9 November when a white pug, called Daisy, was let into the garden of her home.

    It's then reported that a man entered the garden and took the dog.

    It happened in the Greenhill area of Sheffield.

    Police officers have released a photo of a man who they say could hold vital information into what happened.

    Tributes have been paid to a former World War Two veteran from Barnsley who has died at 95.

    The son of RAF veteran and author Harry Leslie Smith tweeted to say his father had died , externalwhile visiting him in Canada.

    The 95-year-old Barnsley-born campaigner and left-wing activist suffered suspected pneumonia.

    Welcome to Yorkshire has revealed the details for its 10th Chelsea Garden at next year's Cheslea Flower Show.

    It will again be designed by Mark Gregory whose 2018 design was inspired by the Yorkshire Dales and scooped a Gold Medal, the People's Choice Award and won the prize for Best Construction.

    The highlight of the 2019 show garden will be an authentically built canal with flowing water and genuine canal lock gates.

    Mark's design also includes a towpath and lock keeper's lodge with a colourful garden and vegetable patch.

    This will be the 99th garden he has worked on at the prestigious show.

    A long-awaited new police telephone system has been rolled out which it's hoped it will reduce the delay in non-emergency 101 calls being answered in South Yorkshire.

    South Yorkshire Police has been waiting for months for contractors to iron out problems with the Smart Contact telephone system which should have gone into service in the spring.

    Callers are unlikely to notice any immediate difference, but the new system is said to be more reliable and will reduce pressure on the 101 system.

    It will help call handlers resolve callers' needs and move on to the next in the queue, according to the force.

    The next step is to introduce a call-back system, providing the opportunity for those wanting non-emergency help to leave their details so officers and staff can call them back.

    North Yorkshire's being asked to commit to hosting the Tour de Yorkshire until 2020 at a cost of nearly £400,000.

    Senior county councillors will debate the plan when they meet next week.

    They'll hear the money will be found from the council's reserves and that this year's race had an "economic impact" of nearly £100m on Yorkshire's economy.

    More than two million spectators watched four days of cycling action in this year's race at the beginning of May.

    A lido is to reopen to swimmers after nearly 30 years as part of a £4.7m scheme to improve two pools in Hull.

    The outdoor pool on Albert Avenue was last used for public swimming in the late 1980s and has only remained open since for use by a private kayak club.

    Under the city council's plans, £2.8m will be spent to revamp the facility and bring it back into public use in the spring and summer months.

    Remaining cash will be used to upgrade the indoor Beverley Road Baths.

    It is expected to open in spring 2020.

    Improvements to Beverley Road Baths include new changing rooms, a sauna and a gym.

    A man being sent to prison for organising cockfighting in North Yorkshire acts as a warning to anyone else thinking of doing the same, the RSPCA has said.

    William Welch was jailed for 20 weeks by Harrogate magistrates after admitting organising and filming "sickening and catastrophic" cockfights.

    He's been banned from keeping animals for 20 years.

    North Yorkshire Police seized 27 birds during a search of premises at Skutterskelfe, near Stokesley, on 13 January, "some of which were bleeding from fresh cuts to the body and head".

    Sgt Kevin Kelly said the footage recovered from Welch's phone was so "sickening" he decided not show it to other officers due to the "extreme graphic nature and scenes of catastrophic suffering to the animals".

    Geoff Edmond, the RSPCA's National Wildlife Crime Coordinator, says: "I feel for the magistrates having to watch this footage, but I think the sentence sends a clear message out."

    Barnsley-born World War Two veteran Harry Leslie Smith has died, a week after being admitted to a hospital in Canada.

    The 95-year-old campaigner fought in World War Two and was a well known left-wing activist.

    Last week, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn joined thousands of others sending messages, with #IStandWithHarry trending on Twitter.

    His son, John, has posted on Twitter saying his dad died earlier this morning:

    A child exploitation scandal victim from South Yorkshire has called for a law change amid claims a man who raped her has been invited to play a role in her son's life.

    Arshid Hussain, who was jailed for 35 years in 2016, was told by Rotherham Council he could seek visits from the child, The Times reported, external.

    Sammy Woodhouse told Good Morning Britain she was devastated when she was informed at a court hearing.

    Ms Woodhouse said Hussain had not made any application to see her son.

    The Ministry of Justice said urgent efforts would be taken to "address the failings in this case".

    Ms Woodhouse said Hussain was "a danger to myself and to other children", telling the ITV programme: "They didn't tell me until I went to court."

    A Huddersfield MP has condemned an attack on a boy at school in the town, which was caught on camera, as "absolutely shocking".

    The "racially-aggravated assault" is being investigated by police after a video was shared on social media.

    A number of people were involved in a violent disturbance in the city's Clifton area at about 19:50 on Friday 2 November, police say.

    The door of the McColls store on Crichton Avenue was damaged and several items of stock destroyed during the incident.

    Officers are asking members of the public to help identify the man shown in the image.

    Staff at Barnsley and Bradford College are being balloted over strike action today in a row over pay.

    The University and College Union says college bosses have failed to make a decent pay offer to staff who the union says have seen their pay fall by "20% over the last decade".

    Union official Julie Kelly says: "Staff are angry and want a decent pay award.

    "We'd like a minimum of 3% and, ideally, some catch-up pay."
