    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A field just outside Scarborough could become the permanent home for an annual travellers' horse fair whose origins date back to the 1300s.

The Seamer Horse Fair, which has an historic connection with Richard II, would be held each year on a piece of land just off the B1261.

For the last nine years, the event has taken place between Seamer and Crossgates, attracting 230 people at its peak, though this year that number dropped to just 55.

Scarborough Borough Council has submitted a planning application for the site, which will be decided in February next year.

The fair dates back to a Royal Charter issued in November 1382 by Richard II, but it was not until the 1900s that the fair became associated with travellers.

Paraffin wax, which originally washed up on the shore in Bridlington, has contaminated about 20 miles of coast line.

The substance, sometimes used to clean-out the storage tanks of commercial ships, has appeared as far north as Humanby Gap, near Filey.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust say it will "impact the marine environment" and could be eaten by birds mistaking it for food.

Its unclear whether more wax could be washed up along the coast.

It depends on the tide and weather, the trust said.
