    A dangerous driver who brought 'chaos' to Castleford after knocking down a pedestrian and assaulting a woman has been jailed for four years.

    Ryan Towning, 34, got into his car following an altercation on 7 July 2018.

    Minutes later, he hit a brick wall, drove at and knocked down a 54-year-old resident.

    He then punched a 39-year-old woman who tried to stop him by jumping into his car.

    Speaking after the sentence at Leeds Crown Court, Det Insp Dan Tillett said: “Towning’s actions on that night were dangerous in the extreme and it is pure luck he didn’t seriously injure, if not kill someone.

    “It beggars belief that someone could act in that way and it is no exaggeration to say his actions brought chaos to a residential area."

    A dog walker who was caught on CCTV hitting a client's pet has been banned from keeping dogs for two years.

    Jacqui Wilkins, 46, of Stanningley, Leeds, was seen hitting the boxer dog in the face twice and shouting at her.

    Bella's owners looked at the CCTV from 9 February last year after noticing her behaviour had changed.

    Wilkins appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court and admitted failing to meet the needs of the dog by rough handling, violence and intimidating behaviour.

    A robber who threatened his victim with an axe has been jailed for six years.

    Meluleki Mpofu, also known as ‘EMZ’, attacked his victim in a property on Cave Street in Hull on 26 May 2018.

    Mpofu demanded cash from the man and took just £20 and his mobile phone.

    He then used an axe to threaten the man, and tried to strangle him.

    Speaking after the sentencing at Hull Crown Court, Det Con Kim Blackburn said: "This was a very frightening experience for the victim in this case who was subjected to intimidation, threatened, and put through a extremely undignified ordeal all for the sake of a small amount of money and a phone."

    Amy Shepherd was found dead in her ground-floor flat at the Folly Hall Gardens residential complex in Bradford in August 1994.

    A post-mortem examination showed Ms Shepherd, who had lived alone for 14 years, died as a result of serious head injuries.

    Raymond Kay, 70, of Baker Fold, Halifax, pleaded not guilty when he appeared at Bradford Crown Court.

    A Heritage Lottery grant worth £2.27m over the next four years has been given to a string of projects to look after part of Cumbria that was included in the extension of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in 2016.

    The 21 projects, external will be overseen by the Friends of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, and they will take place in the high area of limestone dales with Maulds Meaburn at the northern end, Tebay in the south west, and Ravenstonedale in the south east.

    The landscape includes rare limestone pavements and grasslands, 79 scheduled ancient monuments, and a number of sites of special scientific interest and nature reserves.

    The chairman of the dales national park, Carl Lis, said the projects would "reveal and conserve the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage; and promote the understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities, its tranquil and unspoilt character, and its unique heritage".

    Police are appealing for information after a rare Marsh Harrier was shot and killed.

    The bird was discovered alive by a dog walker on the bank of the River Humber near Barton-Upon-Humber on 9 September.

    She reported it to the RSPCA and the police were alerted.

    An X-ray revealed that the bird, which later died of its injuries, had been shot.

    All police enquiries have so far drawn a blank and officers are appealing for information from the public.

    Leeds City Council say an "over-enthusiastic council officer" congratulated Leeds United on an early promotion.

    The council sent out a message earlier today with a statement from the council's leader offering congratulations on the Championship side’s ascension to the Premier League.

    It was a little early though.

    While the team are currently top of the championship, there’s no guarantee on their success quite yet.

    Speaking to the BBC, the council said: “It goes without saying that we are keeping everything crossed that Leeds United will be promoted and return to the Premier League.”

    They added “We wish them the very best of luck for the rest of the season”.

    Plans for a new waste transfer station in Hull are set to be approved, despite objections about potential problems with vermin, smell and noise.

    There have been dozens of letters complaining about the proposed recycling centre in Vulcan Street near Clough Road.

    A total of 48 letters have been received from members of Hull Vineyard Church objecting to the potential smells, odours and noise generated by the proposed waste unit.

    It will be discussed at a planning meeting tomorrow.
