  2. Giant sinkholes insurance headache for city's new poolpublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2019

A council which is building a new swimming pool in a city with a history of huge sinkholes has found it will have to source its its own insurance.

    Sinkhole in Ripon

Ripon in North Yorkshire has a well documented history of sinkholes, which have been identified by the British Geological Survey as a symptom of permian gypsum deposits underneath the town.

A supermarket had to be evacuated in the town when a hole suddenly opened up near it in August 2018.

In 2016 seven homes on Magdalen Road had to be evacuated after a 15m sinkhole appeared nearby.

The architectural firm designing Ripon's new six-lane pool, Pick Everard, only has professional liability insurance for sinkholes up to five metres in diameter.

A report to Harrogate Borough Council stated liability for any sinkholes larger than five metres would now be transferred to the council, given the area's history of ground collapses.

  4. Yorkshire seaside council to declare a 'climate emergency'published at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A climate emergency is to be declared by a Yorkshire seaside council.

    Scarborough

Scarborough Borough Council says by doing so it is looking to send a signal about tackling global warming to other local authorities around Yorkshire and the country.

The council will also commit to a target of zero carbon emissions by 2030.

After Green councillor Dilys Cluer's climate-focused motion passed, to cheers from members of the public watching the debate at last night's council meeting, she said the action would allow the authority "the chance to play a small part in building a more secure future for this planet."

"We are a district council, in a small country in global terms, but this climate emergency depends on action from all," she said.

Councillor Cluer believes the town's position on the coastline made it particularly vulnerable to the impacts of global warming, including flash flooding, coastal erosion, and extreme heat or rain events.

    Bradford Crown CourtImage source, PA

Bradford Crown Court heard Paul Farrell climbed on to the roof of a house in Halifax in June, which was streamed live on social media.

He admitted trying to meet an underage girl for sex and causing £1,000 of damage to the house on Ripon Street.

The 31-year-old's 18-month prison sentence was suspended for two years.

The mobile phone footage captured Farrell, of no fixed address, exchanging insults with people in the street below and hurling tiles off the roof as police officers urged the group to stop filming.

Camille Morland, prosecuting, told the court Farrell had used his own Facebook profile to arrange meetings for sex with a 13-year-old "decoy" monitored by the Catching Online Predators group.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, the Recorder of Bradford, said his decision to suspend the jail term was due to the time in custody Farrell had already served on remand.
