    A community project run by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust has been granted nearly £170,000 from the National Lottery.

    It will be used to help more than 1,000 vulnerable and isolated adults improve their lives through nature by joining walks and picnics or taking up wildlife photography.

    Over the last five years, more than 4,000 people have taken part in Wild at Heart through more than 700 nature-based activity sessions, according to the project.

    A man, who fell down a cliff in Filey, has been described as being in a stable condition.

    He suffered a hip injury in the incident, near Filey Country Park, in the early hour hours of yesterday morning.

    The man was described as distressed, but conscious and breathing, when police found him halfway down the cliff at about 04:30.

    A team of coastguards transported him on a stretcher and he was then transferred by ambulance to hospital in Hull, where he is receiving treatment and support.

    Police have arrested two people on suspicion of drug offences after a man died suddenly in Harrogate.

    Officers arrested a man, 51, and a woman, 61, after the sudden death on Woodfield Road on Wednesday morning.

    They have been released under investigation while police establish the cause of death for the man, who was in his 50s.

  6. 'Ecobrick' scheme aiming to cut plastic wastepublished at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2019

    A scheme to cut plastic waste by making building bricks out of packaging is being run out of West Yorkshire.

    The Leeds-based initiative is encouraging people to turn single use plastics into "ecobricks," which can be used for things like benches, flower beds and walls.

    National coordinator Kim Mak said: "The concept is using things we would have ordinarily sent to landfill or incineration to build reusable building blocks, to give them another life instead of being resigned to disposal."

  7. Fallen floodlight: Work to begin at Hull stadium next weekpublished at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2019

    Work is due to begin next week at a rugby stadium in Hull where a floodlight collapsed in high winds.

    The major incident in November has caused disruption to rugby matches and pop concerts at KCOM Craven Park.

    Hull City Council says work is now due to start at the ground and is expected to be completed by Friday next week.

    Hull Kingston Rovers play at the stadium and compete in the Super League with a new season starting in early February.

  8. York band chosen to play US music festivalpublished at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2019

    A band from York has been chosen to play at a prestigious music festival in the United States.

    The Howl and the Hum performing on the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1's Biggest Weekend at Singleton Park, Swansea in May 2018.

    The Howl and the Hum will travel to Austin in Texas for the South by Southwest festival, which attracts talent scouts and record labels from around the world.

    They are one of only five artists chosen to go out of 39 acts from around the country put forward by BBC Introducing.

    Vocalist Sam Griffiths says: "We're silly excited, we're all mad about America, American music, film and culture, it's going to be great, we can't wait."

    Commonly called SXSW, South By Southwest has helped break such artists as The Strokes and Katy Perry, who generated significant buzz after playing the event as relative unknowns.

    Arctic Monkeys also played their first significant US gig at the festival in 2006, attracting huge attention after the UK success of their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

    Yorkshire's airports have reassured passengers they have measures in place to defend against unauthorised use of drones.

    Neither of the major international airports in the region have experienced drone incidents, which have recently caused disruption at London Heathrow and Gatwick.

    Dr Stephen Wright, aviation lecturer at the University of Leeds, says: "Any active airfield could potentially suffer from this particular problem."

    Leeds Bradford Airport says it has a "robust response and contingency plans in place".

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport says it's "geo-fenced" to protect against drones.

    A pioneering technique to teach students about anatomy using body paint and ultraviolet light has been successfully developed in Yorkshire.

    The method makes it possible for students at Hull York Medical School to fully visualise the structures that exist under the skin.

    The joint medical school of the universities of Hull and York opened in 2003 and describes itself as "one of the UK’s most exciting, contemporary schools".

    A new theatre, planned for a shop in Sheffield, will help support people with learning difficulties and disabilities, its organiser says.

    The Local Theatre, which will be based in a converted shop space in the city, is expected to open in March.

    Board member Olly Newton said Sheffield is becoming "the theatre capital of the North."

    He says he wants to put on shows which will attract people who do not usually go to see plays.

    More train passengers in Yorkshire will be able to pay for their journeys using their mobile phones after a trial on services between Bridlington and Scarborough.

    The "smart-ticketing" scheme will eventually be rolled out on routes across the region, making it easier for travellers to pay.

    Transport for the North say it will bring flexibility for travellers and benefit the environment by encouraging more people to use public transport.

    An announcement is expected next week on a bid to secure about £5m of lottery funding for one of Scarborough's famous public gardens.

    Campaigners say the money is vital to save South Cliff Gardens, which have been described as being in a "fragile condition".

    Dave Auton, who chairs the South Cliff Community Group, ran a fund raising campaign which has already brought in more than £100,000.

    He said: "When the gardens were built, the Victorians would have had views of the sea, all we've got now are views of overgrown trees, it's not been managed to provide that level of Victorian excellence."

    A West Yorkshire MP is calling for a new minister of hunger to deal with the number of people struggling to buy food in the UK.

    Mary Creagh, chairs a group of MPs, and has written a report looking at the number of people in the country who are going hungry or are malnourished.

    The Labour MP for Wakefield says the UK is the worst in Europe for children growing up in "severely food-insecure households".

    She said: "No child should go bed hungry in the UK but sadly for too many children that is the reality, growing up in families that are unable to put food on the table."

    Rent is expected to be reduced on 39,000 council homes in Sheffield in line with the national policy for rent-setting.

    Sheffield Council could also invest up to £400m in the maintenance of existing homes over the next five years, if proposals are approved next week.

    There could also be a further 1,600 new homes built, and others acquired, in order to meet increasing demand.

    An East Yorkshire charity is set to benefit from items which were due to go to landfill.

    Dove House Hospice has teamed up with FCC Environment, which runs the Hessle recycling centre, to sell unwanted goods in a decent condition, such as furniture and TVs.

    Amy Lowsley from the charity said: "It's fantastic that we're able to help find a home for all these unwanted, unloved things which would have gone into the landfill."

    He will now become an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at a ceremony later.
