A big engineering project requires big machines - and they don't come much bigger than the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which is now making its way from Germany.

Operating 250m below the ground, the gargantuan gadget will create a 23-mile tunnel from Whitby to Redcar.

It's 225m long and it's far too big to be shipped over whole, so it's been taken apart in Germany and reassembled here.

Sirius Minerals say once the TBM's tunnel is complete, the passage will transport twenty million tonnes of polyhalite ore a year from North Yorkshire to Teesside, from where it'll be sent all over the world.

  9. High-emission tax plan for Leeds approvedpublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2019

Plans to charge owners of high-polluting vehicles a fee to drive into parts of Leeds have been approved.

Leeds City Council will receive £29m in government funding to implement the clean air charging zone.

Only heavy goods vehicles, buses, coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles which don't meet the council's minimum emissions standards will be charged daily for driving within the zone.

There'll be a charge of £50 for HGVs, buses and coaches and £12.50 for taxis.

The scheme aims to reduce air pollution in the city by encouraging businesses to use cleaner, less polluting vehicles.

It's being implemented after the government instructed Leeds City Council to tackle air pollution in the city as soon as possible.

It found some areas of the city "would likely fail legal air quality levels by 2020".

Mark Fell's A Stitch Outside Time is made up of noises responding to the movement and location of the train.

It's currently being used on the line between London and Shoeburyness in Essex, with sounds being triggered by 93 "nodes" along the route.

Rail firm C2C said it hoped the app would "brighten up the morning commute" for passengers.

Mr Fell said: "The composition was inspired by the tala rhythm found in Indian classical music."

"Sound synthesis and pattern-generating systems mean listeners will never hear the same piece of music twice," he added.
