  4. In pictures: Super blood wolf moon looms over Yorkshirepublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2019

Thanks to Keith Sykes in East Yorkshire for sending us this fantastic picture of the "super blood wolf moon" overnight.

During this spectacular event the Earth's natural satellite turns a striking shade of red.

This kind of eclipse occurs when the Earth passes precisely between the Sun and the Moon.

The Sun is behind the Earth, and the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow.

Sandra Barber took this close-up of the moon from her front garden in Filey on the Yorkshire coast.

She tweeted the pic saying, in true Waterboys style, that she'd "seen the whole of the moon".

  8. Families gather for 30th Hull Lost Trawlermen's Daypublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2019

A memorial event for the 6,000 Hull trawlermen lost at sea has been held by the Humber estuary.

    Memorial

The 30th Lost Trawlermen's Day service took place on Sunday at Saint Andrews Quay retail park, with hundreds of family and friends of trawlermen in attendance.

The Bishop of Hull gave an address, with readings by ex-Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson.

The event is organised by the STAND fishing heritage charity and aims to maintain Hull's fishing port heritage.

Flowers were thrown onto the banks of the River Humber after the service.

The annual event is always held in either January or February - a time of year when most trawlers are lost.

Ron Wilkinson, STAND chairman, said: "It's important children realise their grandfathers and great-grandfathers were involved in what was once the biggest deep-sea fishing fleet in the world."

Martin Warhurst was in the crowd for the Premier League game at Huddersfield when cameras zoomed in on him, in the belief that he was Jan Siewert.

A Sky reporter was shown - although not heard - asking Mr Warhurst if he was the new German manager.

He said: "I'm Martin from Wakefield."

Siewert, a coach at German team Borussia Dortmund, has been tipped to take over the job of managing Huddersfield.

Mr Warhurst told the Press Association: "It was bizarre. I was sat in the crowd and suddenly I was aware of a guy coming towards me from the right-hand side.

"He said. 'Are you Jan, the new manager?' I laughed and said, 'No, no, that's not me. I'm Martin from Wakefield.'"

Mr Warhurst acknowledged his likeness with Siewert but joked: "I'm a much more attractive guy."

  11. In pictures: Under a blood red moonpublished at 06:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2019

Thanks to Vicky in York for providing us with our first shot of the "super blood wolf moon".

    Red moonImage source, Vicky Walker

She snapped it about 05:00 in the darkness above York and said: "I usually miss these things because they happen at the wrong time for me, but for once I saw it."

The special sight occurs because of a lunar eclipse caused through the Sun, Earth and Moon being aligned, causing what some are calling a super blood wolf moon.

The "super" part comes from the fact the Moon is at its closest to the Earth - when it's bigger in the sky than usual.

The "wolf" part comes from the name given to full moons in January - "wolf moons".

And it appears red due to a small amount of sunlight being refracted by the Earth's atmosphere.

This small amount of red light still illuminates the Moon enough for us to see it.
