    A shop in Beverley Road was held up at about 11:15 by a man who Humberside Police believe was armed with a knife.

    He demanded cash but left before anything was take.

    Although no-one was hurt, a shop assistant is said to have been "left distressed".

    A driver has been jailed after falling asleep at the wheel and killing a grandmother on the A64 near Malton.

    Eric John Williams was on a caravan holiday with his family in Scarborough when he fell asleep, failing to take a bend in the road.

    The 77-year-old, from Smithy Parade in Dewsbury, veered into the opposite carriageway, colliding with two cars, one driven by Jackie Lamb (pictured).

    The 70-year-old, from Settrington, near Malton, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision in July 2017.

    Williams appeared at York Crown Court where he was sentenced to 20 months for causing death by dangerous driving.

    He was also banned from driving for three years and 10 months and ordered to do an extended driving test.

    This baby seal was rescued near Bridlington using a special rescue bag bought with funds raised by a port operator.

    Associated British Ports Humber, which runs ports in Hull, Goole, Grimsby and Immingham, shared a picture on Twitter of the "weak pup" which was saved using the bag:

    A "devious" paedophile has been jailed for five years after he attempted to groom children in Sheffield, just a year into his original sentence.

    Andrew Moore, 51, from Upperthorpe, Sheffield, was given a suspended sentence for historic sexual offences against two victims in 2017.

    In summer 2018, Moore then tried to make inappropriate contact with two families' children.

    He bought expensive gifts in attempt to befriend the victims.

    Police were alerted and he was arrested.

    Speaking at Sheffield Crown Court, John Bowler, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "Moore has shown himself to be a devious and manipulative individual, grooming children and attempting to ingratiate himself into families to gain access to young people."

    Hospital wards in Scarborough and Bridlington have been affected by norovirus and this comes after an outbreak of the so-called "winter vomiting bug" in York.

    The NHS has asked members of the public to "think twice" before visiting their loved ones in hospital and to stay away if ill.

    Earlier this week, York Hospital placed restrictions on visitors, with wards closed to stop the spread of norovirus.

    CCTV images have been released of two men police want to speak to after a man was seriously injured in an attack at a Sheffield takeaway.

    Two men are believed to have attacked customers at Chattanooga in Hillsborough with a plank of wood following an earlier argument and fight.

    The incident happened on Sunday 16 December at about 01:00.

    One man suffered serious facial injuries requiring surgery. Another man suffered minor injuries.

    Rescuers were unable to save a porpoise found stranded on Bridlington's South Beach.

    A walker spotted the 1.5-metre long mammal on the beach and reported it to British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

    Volunteers tried to return the harbour porpoise to the sea, but the animal died shortly after they reached the scene.

    The organisation has put out an appeal for people who see a stranded porpoise, whale or dolphin on the Yorkshire coast to contact them straight away.

    The remains of the porpoise are being send to a lab for an autopsy as part of a long-term research project into the causes of deaths among dolphins and their relatives in the UK .

    A York nightspot, named in honour of an iconic indie band, could close for good because police have objected to an application for a new licence saying officers were called out there 51 times last year.

    Police say last year there was was a 34% rise calls to incidents at Stone Roses Bar, including violence, anti-social behaviour and thefts.

    The bar, on King Street, has asked for a licence to play live music, sell alcohol and open from 11:00 to 02:30, seven days a week, after the premises' previous one lapsed.

    The bar, which is currently shut "due to unforeseen circumstances", has started a petition, saying it is at risk of closing for good, and more than 6,000 people have already signed it.

    The application will be considered by members of the licensing committee at a hearing on 7 February.

    People with a learning disability or autism have as much right to a social and cultural life as anyone else, organisers say.
