Bradford Council has agreed to lobby for abandonment plans to be delayed in order to find potential sources of cash.

The tunnel connects Bradford to Halifax and the Queensbury Tunnel Society wants the 1.4-mile (2.3km) tunnel to be opened to cyclists.

It was abandoned in the 1950s and has suffered from lack of maintenance.

However, Bradford Council did say it could not take on the tunnel due to lack of funds.

Bringing a cycle path from Bradford city centre to Halifax, via the tunnel, would cost £16m with a further £7m for maintenance cost for 30 years, says the council report.

Highways England, through Historic Railways Estate, own the tunnel and has identified it as as high risk structurally and has prepared proposals for the safe abandonment of the structure.

  5. Stress and depression main cause of council absencepublished at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Stress and depression were the leading cause of staff absence at Harrogate Borough Council at the end of 2018, new figures have shown.

A report presented to the council shows stress and depression were responsible for 23% of absences from October to December 2018.

It's the first time mental health issues have been the main cause of sick leave at the council since the method of reporting was changed from a yearly forecast, to one based on actual monthly absences.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Pat Marsh asked the committee: "Is that due to staff being under more pressure because there's less staff so they're expected to do one and a half jobs?"

She added: "We need to get to the bottom of this because this will continually happen if we don't address it now."

The council's business intelligence and performance manager, Rachel Glynn, said: "Some of those figures are not just related to work related stress, they're related to stress at home as well.

"There's an awful lot of work being carried out by HR and employee relations and we are actively managing stress absence."

Ms Glyn said there were a range of services council staff could use to help manage stress both inside and outside of the council.
