  1. Hull tent attack: Jail for two men caught on CCTVpublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2019

    A man who was caught on CCTV taking a running jump into a tent with two homeless men inside in Hull has been jailed by a judge who told him: "What you did is repugnant to right-minded people."

    Jamie Nickell, 26, landed feet first on the tent in a shop doorway on Whitefriargate in the city centre while his friend filmed him on a phone.

    At Hull Crown Court, Nickell, of Goldsmith Walk, Lincoln, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm to one of the men in the tent who suffered a minor injury to his knee.

    Sentencing Nickell to four months in prison, Judge Mark Bury said: "There are too many homeless people in our society these days. They do not need to be treated in this way."

    The judge heard how the pair were drunk after travelling to Hull to go to a concert on November 30 last year.

    Earlier this week, Jake Mann, 29, also of Goldsmith Walk, was jailed for 14 weeks after filming the attack.

    A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a number of ram raids at businesses in Sheffield.

    Four ram raids took place on Sunday morning at a Screwfix and a Tesco Express in Hillsborough, a Chapeltown petrol station and a shop on Pot House Lane.

    The man, from the Parson Cross area, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit thefts.

    He has since been released under investigation.

    A five-time British Olympian has agreed to become a patron of a charity that helps get parents in East Yorkshire active.

    Distance runner Jo Pavey has got involved with Fit Mums which, despite it's name, is also for dads and grandparents as well.

    She said: "It's just such a brilliant thing, they encourage people of all abilities to be active, I was so inspired by their enthusiasm, their friendliness and the camaraderie in the organisation."

    Police want to identify him after a man pretended to be a council worker to gain entry and steal from an elderly man in Doncaster.

    At about 15:00 on 28 January, a man knocked on a property on Galsworthy Close.

    He said he was from the council and asked about the water supply.

    The suspect left ten minutes later, having taken the elderly man's wallet containing £500 in cash.

    Police are keen to speak to anyone with any information.

    Homeowners and renters using inefficient storage heaters, room heaters or fires could get a brand new central heating system installed for free.

    North Yorkshire County Council has secured funding to help people living in Ryedale, Scarborough and Hambleton reduce their energy bills and transform their home's heating.

    To qualify for the funding, each resident must either be in receipt of certain benefits or have a household income below £21,000 and live in a property that wastes energy.

    Ryedale District Council, Scarborough Borough Council and Hambleton District Council have also provided match funding to support installations in their areas.

    More than 300 children have taken part in the School Strike for Climate protest in Sheffield, the majority skipping school to attend.

    They gathered outside the city's town hall with placards bearing slogans like "The oceans are rising and so are we" and "I missed PE for this".

    As the crowd chanted "There is no planet B", pupil after pupil took to the steps to deliver their message and show their support.

    One quoted Greta Thunberg - the Swedish teenager credited with sparking these events - and Nelson Mandela, while another led a rendition of Bob Marley's One Love.

    Among the crowd was nine-year-old Ivy, from Sheffield.

    She said: "I'm here because I do not want the world to end and I do not want all the creatures to die.

    "We're the next generation so we need to do this."

    Prisons Minister Rory Stewart, who offered to resign if he couldn't reduce violence in six Yorkshire prisons, says he's seeing early signs of improvement.

    Mr Stewart gave himself a year from August 2018 to improve conditions in a total of 10 prisons.

    Six of those are in Yorkshire:

    • Leeds
    • Hull
    • Humber
    • Lindholme
    • Moorland
    • Wealstun

    Mr Stewart said: "I wouldn't have put my job on the line unless I was confident we can do it.

    "In those 10 prisons, violence has been rising steadily month on month for five years, so turning that around and bringing it down is going to be a challenge."

    Two octogenarians in Scarborough have proved you're never too old to find love after getting engaged.

    Anne-Marie Sullivan, 84, and Gordon Smith, 86, met at the care home where they live after they sat at the same table for lunch one day and struck up a conversation.

    Staff at Scarborough Hall held a party for the couple yesterday.

    The couple say: "Finding one another later in life makes us appreciate the time we have to spend together is precious."

    A man and a woman have been charged with murder in connection with the death of a man whose body was found in woods in Barnsley last September.

    Gary Dean, 49, was found with severe injuries in woods behind Moorend Lane, near the Trans Pennine Trail, on 6 September.

    He had suffered a serious assault, say South Yorkshire Police.

    Scott James Dawson, 41, of Allotts Court, and Carol Dawson, 71, of Stonewood Grove, have been charged with murder.

    They have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

    The South Pennines on the border of Yorkshire and Lancashire could be recognised as a national park.

    It's the only upland area in England not given statutory protection, and later today the man leading a review into England's national parks will visit the area.

    It follows Michael Gove's announcement of a review of England's national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty last May.

  13. Students walk out of school for climate change protestpublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2019

    At least 100 Sheffield students have walked out of their lessons this morning as they protest about climate change.

    Demonstrations across the country have been organised by youth climate change groups.

    The campaign has been inspired by 15-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who has been skipping school every Friday to protest outside the Swedish parliament.

    Sheffield student Charlie, 16, said those taking part hoped the government would do more to raise awareness.

    He said: "I think they could and should be going above and beyond to raise awareness particularly for big companies that operate in Britain about how they can go about running their businesses in a sustainable way."

  14. Brexit means 'uncertainty' for Sausage World planspublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2019

    There are question marks around the future of a new tourist attraction, called Sausage World, as the company behind the plans said it would no longer be able to apply for European Union grants after Brexit.

    Food producer Heck have already received the go-ahead for a £4m expansion of its factory, in Kirklington, near Bedale, North Yorkshire, which would include a new visitor centre.

    It had hoped EU grants would be able to help support the development.

    The company currently employs 120 staff, of which 85 are from Europe, now hopes to raise money for the scheme by expanding into Ireland and selling vegan sausages to Australia.

    Jamie Keeble, co-founder of Heck Food, said: "After losing out on EU funding because of Brexit we will have to fund our sausage world out of cash so are ramping up our international exports."

    He said Brexit was "creating huge uncertainty" and the support for small food companies "has all disappeared down the Brexit plug hole".

    A motorcyclist has died from injuries sustained in a serious collision in Huddersfield, police have confirmed.

    The 21-year-old was travelling up Huddersfield Road and collided with a parked Vauxhall Vivaro at about 16:15 on 9 February.

    Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage to get in touch.

    A South Yorkshire Police drone, which was on its first deployment, helped find three people following a police pursuit.

    South Yorkshire Police officers were called to reports of a vehicle travelling on false plates yesterday.

    Two men ran from police, but the drone helped officers locate them hiding in undergrowth.

    Earlier this week we reported that the force had increased the number of drones it was deploying.

    A new project has launched in Leeds to get more people helping out at their local cemetery.

    Leeds City Council is helping to launch Leeds Cemetery Volunteers to ask people to help maintain sites across the city.

    The council says cemeteries have a wealth of wildlife and a rich history.

    Plans for a 143-bedroom hotel and a six-storey apartment block on Piccadilly in York could get the green light at a meeting next week.

    Under the proposals, the Infinity Motorcycles shop and car park opposite Spark York would be demolished and a Hampton By Hilton hotel would be built.

    The neighbouring eight-storey Ryedale House is currently being converted into a luxury apartment block.

    The report says the hotel plans have been altered in response to concerns about the height of the building and proposals for a rooftop terrace have been scrapped.

    The apartments would overlook the River Foss and the Eye of York.

    Police have released CCTV of two men they are trying to identify in relation to a serious assault in Leeds.

    A 38-year-old man was approached by two men outside an off-licence on Roundhay Road at about 15:20 on 19 November.

    The victim was seriously assaulted and was treated in hospital for eye and back injuries.

    Police are keen to speak to anyone with any information about the two men or the incident.
