  8. Fresh delay for York's community stadiumpublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2019

There's been yet another delay to the opening of York's new community stadium.

It was first proposed more than a decade ago and the project was due to be finished in the summer.

The site was due to open in July but will not be ready until August 19 at the earliest, although City of York Council was not able to say if the project has been delayed by weeks or by months, or explain the reasons for the hold-up.

Rugby League side York City Knights were due to play their last two home games of the current season at the community stadium.

The delay also means York City FC will not be able to start their 2019/20 football season in early August at the new venue.

Both teams currently play at City's Bootham Crescent ground, for which Persimmon have just submitted a planning application to develop into housing.

The council said: "We understand there will be a delay to the completion of the York Stadium Leisure Complex.

"This would mean a handful of games would not be able to take place in the new stadium as planned and the accompanying leisure facilities will be unable to open as soon as we'd hoped.

"This is subject to commercial discussions so we cannot comment further."

York City Knights said the delay was "deeply frustrating".
