  14. Fracking firm hopes to expand North Yorkshire operationspublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

One of the companies behind long-delayed plans to frack for shale gas in North Yorkshire now says it wants to expand its operation.

    Kirby MispertonImage source, PA

Updating its licences with the Oil and Gas Authority, Third Energy has set out plans which include fracking at its existing well at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering, by the end of this year.

The firm also says it wants to then drill a well a year in Ryedale by the end of 2022, including a 1,000m well which it would frack by the end of September next year and a 3,000m well by the end of September 2021.

According to its updated licence, Third Energy also wants to drill and frack a fourth well in the area by the end of December 2022.

The company still needs to pass the government's financial resilience test before it can get the go-ahead for any fracking to take place in Ryedale.

Steve Mason, from the campaign group Frack Free Ryedale, says: "This reinforces the case we've always been saying, that this isn't about just one well, it's about multiple wells, multiple sites, which could seriously impact Ryedale."

  20. New cruise terminal for Hull would 'put city on map'published at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

Plans for a cruise terminal in Hull's Victoria Dock have sparked concerns among some people living in the area who say its "benefits would not outweigh the negatives".

Cruise linerImage source, Hull City Council

Hull City Council wants to build the terminal near The Deep, an aquarium with over 3,000 creatures, including sharks and sawfish.

At a public meeting last night, people living close to the proposed location raised their concerns, with some saying building the terminal next to a residential development and housing for the elderly is "inappropriate and wouldn't work".

Chief executive of The Deep, Katy Duke, says fish, sharks and penguins would suffer long-term stress if the plan goes ahead.

But Darren Hale, deputy leader of Hull City Council, says: "A new terminal would put the city on the map for general tourism.

"That could only benefit The Deep, the city's museums and the tourist trade in Hull.

"I think most people listening to the debate are curious as to why anyone would oppose a cruise terminal, which would bring such benefits to the city of Hull."
