    A man has died after a crash in Rotherham.

    The pedestrian, a 42-year-old man, was hit by a car last night at about 20:15 on Common Lane, Ravenfield.

    It's thought the man was in the road when he was hit by a black Dacia Duster, South Yorkshire Police say.

    Two people have been arrested and more than 50,000 cigarettes have been seized from a motor garage in Sheffield.

    The illegal cigarettes were found alongside hand rolling tobacco at the unnamed city centre garage following an investigation from Trading Standards and South Yorkshire Police.

    A total of 57,940 cigarettes and 8kg of tobacco was seized.

    Plans have been unveiled for a £250m food and leisure attraction off the A1 in North Yorkshire.

    It's hoped Future Park near Knaresborough will create 1,000 jobs and attract three and a half million visitors a year, if it's granted planning permission.

    The park, which is expected to open in 2022, will be operated by Eataly, which already runs a similar attraction in Bologna.

    Hundreds of schoolchildren in Sheffield have gone on strike from lessons to protest about climate change.

    About 350 young people made placards and chanted outside Sheffield Town Hall.

    It is connected to a strike that calls upon students all over the world to leave school in order to persuade governments to do something about climate change.

    Strikes are taking place in more than 100 countries and in more than 2,000 towns and cities.

    Non-league East Yorkshire football club North Ferriby United has been wound-up over unpaid debts, ending 85 years of history.

    The club was formed in 1934 and had its greatest moment in 2015 when it won the FA Trophy at Wembley.

    Following a court hearing, the club will not be allowed to play any more fixtures and has been placed in the hands of a liquidator, according to a Tweet from the club, external.

    It went on to thank fans and players who have supported it over the years.

    Some fans say there's already interest in starting up a new club in the village under a different guise.

    Rotherham Council has dropped its objection to test drilling for shale gas at a site in Woodsetts.

    It had initially refused the planning application by Ineos on the ground of highway safety, but the authority says there wasn't enough evidence to provide a robust case to support the reason for refusal.

    In response, Ineos has said it's pleased by the decision.

    However, the company added it was disappointed the objection was mounted in the first place.

    School pupils in York have joined the second national protest over climate change.

    Last month more than 15,000 young people turned out at demonstrations across the country.

    The York pupils gathered at 11:00 this morning and remain in St Helen's Square.

    There have also been protests by pupils in Sheffield, Bradford, Hebden Bridge and Leeds.

    They say the government's not doing enough about climate change.

    Strikes are taking place today in more than 2,000 towns and cities, in over 100 different countries.

    A man's been found dead in woods in Leeds.

    Police say he was found unresponsive in woods off Elmete Lane in Roundhay.

    Emergency services attended and the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

    Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious and the Coroner’s Office has been informed.

    The Sheffield Sharks basketball team are returning home after announcing they're to play next season's home fixtures at the city's Ponds Forge.

    The team have been playing at the English Institute of Sport for the past 13 seasons, but fixture changes means they've not had a consistent routine, the club said.

    They will now move to Ponds Forge, their original home, for the start of the 2019-20 season.

    A joint police and fire service investigation is under way to find the cause of a fire which killed a man in Sheffield.

    South Yorkshire Fire Service crews were called to the blaze on New Cross Drive at about 05:30 this morning.

    Firefighters from Parkway, Birley Moor and Aston Park stations extinguished the fire, which is thought to have started in a ground floor room next to the kitchen.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Group Manager Andy Hayter said the fatal blaze was a "really tragic incident."

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a designer clothes shop in Sheffield was targeted by ram-raiders.

    Harrison Menswear, on Ecclesall Road, was hit by raiders at about 03:35 yesterday morning.

    It's understood they used a car to damage shutters and force entry into the shop before stealing a quantity of designer clothing and leaving the scene.

    Officers are appealing for witnesses and say they're keen to speak to any pedestrians or drivers who may have seen what happened.

  14. Decision day for critical care at Northallerton hospitalpublished at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2019

    Patients who need critical care at a North Yorkshire hospital may have to travel further for treatment if changes are approved at a meeting later.

    The county's health watchdog will discuss putting new measures in place at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, which could lead to people being sent to Middlesbrough for treatment.

    There are plans for the A&E department, which serves 120,000 people, to "temporarily" close due to patient safety issues and staff shortages, the NHS has said.

    The move's been triggered by concerns around patient safety and staffing issues and, if approved, critical care at the hospital will be suspended from 27 March.

    The eventual permanent closure of the hospital's A&E unit felt "inevitable", according to the leader of Hambleton District Council.

    But the hospital said the vast majority of services will be unchanged.

    The panel ended up on lane three northbound between junction 50 and 51, causing the closure of the road in that direction.

    Highways England said it was working to get the panel removed.

    There are plans to cut almost 60 jobs at North Yorkshire Police.

    The potential redundancies are the first part of plans by the force to save £10m over four years.

    The force says the proposals have been put forward to improve the efficiency and affordability of backroom staff and the force control room.

    A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: “On the basis of the proposals there could be 57 redundancies.

    “We’re confident that we will be able to offer alternative roles for many of those who wish to remain within North Yorkshire Police.”

    The force says no firm decisions on the proposals or redundancies will be made until a consultation has been completed, and the responses have been considered.

    It might only be March, but people have queued overnight for tickets to see York Theatre Royal's 2019 panto, which have gone on sale today.

    This year's panto is Sleeping Beauty and the queue for tickets started yesterday lunchtime.

    For the first time in 40 years, this year's panto will not star Berwick Kaler (pictured), the UK's longest-serving panto dame...however, he is writing it.

    Mr Kaler, 72, had entertained generations of fans at York Theatre Royal since 1977 but the curtain closed on his final performance of The Grand Old Dame of York last month.
