    Ghurkas based in York are preparing curry for a charity night being organised by the city's Lord Mayor tonight.

    The soldiers will be making Nepalese food for the event at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, to raise money for local charities.

    Major Tom Skinner, is the commanding officer of squadron of Gurkha signalers, based at the city's Imphal Barracks.

    He said: "They'll be some traditional Nepalese dancing as well to entertain the crowd and show some people who have never experienced that before a bit of the history and tradition of the Gurkha soldier."

    Police pulled the plug on an illegal all-night rave in a South Yorkshire wood this weekend.

    Residents in villages for miles around Langsett Woods, near Barnsley, endured a night of disturbance until the police shut down the sound system ravers were using at 08:00 on Sunday.

    The council has now launched an investigation into the all-night event, which was unlicensed and took place on land owned by Yorkshire Water, with a councillor warning prosecutions could follow.

    Councillor Hannah Kitching said: "This event was both illegal and incredibly disruptive to local, and not so local, residents.

    "That doesn't mean that I, or the council, don't ever want anyone to have any fun, you can have a good night without keeping four villages awake, I'm sure."

    A masked man is wanted in connection with a burglary after he was photographed by a smart doorbell at a house in East Yorkshire.

    Police are trying to identify the man, who wore a light coloured hat and a bandana around his face, after he was caught on CCTV attached to a doorbell at the property in Thorngumbald.

    A number of items, including two bicycles, were stolen from the house on Fieldside Close in the early hours of Sunday 17 March.

    Plans to introduce body cameras for traffic wardens in Wakefield have received trade union backing.

    UNISON says the measure is necessary to stop the abuse faced by attendants, after figures showed verbal and physical assaults on them has more than doubled in the district.

    Wakefield Council will introduce the cameras in the hope it will reduce the number of attacks.

    It said the welfare of staff is a "top priority".

    UNISON's regional manager, Karen Loughlin, said that the move was welcome, but added that more must be done to change public perceptions about wardens across the country.

    She said: "Part of the problem is that the public just seems to think that parking attendants are part of a money-making scheme run by councils.

    "They don't see abusing them as unacceptable but double yellow lines are there for a reason and traffic wardens are just doing their job."

    Bridlington's seafood festival will make a return to the resort this year after a break of three years.

    The festival is designed to highlight the importance of the shell fishing industry to the Yorkshire coast.

    The event, scheduled for the weekend of the 15 and 16 of June, will feature cookery demonstrations as well as entertainment for children and live music.

    Checks are going to be carried out on what people are putting in their recycling bins in parts of West Yorkshire.

    The recycling rate in Kirklees is very low, so officials have now been given the job of looking through every green bin.

    Yellow stickers will be placed on any bins with the wrong type of rubbish in them and people will be given advice on how to recycle properly.

    The British Library is considering opening a branch in Leeds to coincide with its 50th anniversary.

    The organisation, which is home to 1.5m items, is looking at opening a site in the city to build on the city's year of culture in 2023.

    It has also announced plans to expand existing storage facilities in Boston Spa, near Wetherby.

    The sister of the murdered West Yorkshire MP, Jo Cox, says threats to politicians have got nastier since the member for Batley and Spen was killed.

    Jo Cox was murdered by a right-wing extremist, days before the Brexit referendum, in 2016.

    Last week, the Prime Minister was accused of stirring up public anger against MPs, when she gave a speech criticising them for failing to back her Brexit deal.

    Kim Leadbeater, who now runs the Jo Cox Foundation, says MPs are becoming "dehumanised."

    She says: "The stories I've heard from MPs about the threats made to them, their families and staff, on social media and by email, are awful.

    "This is a daily occurrence, people are living with this, day in, day out."

    A 47-year-old man was left with a broken leg after a serious assault in York.

    The victim needed extensive hospital treatment after the serious assault, near the former Carpetright store on Foss Islands Road.

    The incident, which happened on 20 February, has only recently been brought to the attention of North Yorkshire Police.

  14. Clocks sold to honour inventorpublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2019

    A selection of 1,000 clocks, which have been on display in North Lincolnshire, have been sold today.

    A huge display of clocks, known as Harrison's Garden was created in Barton-upon-Humber, to recognise inventor, John Harrison.

    Harrison, the son of a carpenter, was born near Wakefield in 1693 and moved to Barton-upon-Humber at the age of 7.

    He went on to invent the marine chronometer.

    Today, a selection of the clocks were offered to the public, in return for a donation.

    The rest will be sold at auction in Lincoln next month.

    The money raised will be used to create a life-size bronze statue of the inventor in Barton.

    A vehicle driven off immediately after hitting a pedestrian in York is believed to be a taxi, police say.

    Officers have released the above image of a car they're trying to trace following the collision, which happened on Tadcaster Road at 22:45 on Tuesday 5 March.

    They are urging the driver of the black estate to come forward immediately.

    After colliding with the pedestrian, the vehicle was driven off immediately leaving the injured victim at the scene.

    PC David Ellison, who is investigating the incident, said: “Until then there are some ongoing lines of inquiry of which I remain confident will lead us to the driver responsible.”

    Hull student Libby Squire, whose body was found in the Humber estuary last week, was identified by her fingerprints, an inquest into her death has heard.

    The 21-year-old's body was found on Wednesday, seven weeks after she went missing following a night out on 1 February.

    Police say they're treating her death as a "potential homicide".

    A coroner's inquest into her death was opened and adjourned this afternoon.

    Miss Squire's body will not be released at this stage because forensic investigations are ongoing, police told coroner Professor Paul Marks.

    A historic cannon has been unearthed during an archaeological dig at the site of fortress in Hull which was originally built for Henry VIII in the 1540s.

    The historic artifact, was found during a dig at the site of the South Blockhouse and has since been inspected by the York Archaeological Trust.

    The weapon was transported to York and will now undergo specialist x-rays in order to determine its composition and how it was manufactured.

    There will be open days on Thursday and Saturday at the site near The Deep, which was built to house guns and protect the gunners and ammunition from attack.
