Doncaster Labour councillors Dave Shaw, Nikki McDonald, Tosh McDonald and Lani-Mae Ball said they will not be supporting the race as it comes through the town on 3 May.

Ineos has licences to frack in Yorkshire, Cheshire and the Midlands.

Doncaster Council voted to ban fracking on council-owned land last year, but Ineos has a test site near the village of Misson just over the Doncaster boundary.

The sponsorship of the team by Ineos, owned by Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has been met with some opposition from campaigners who say the use of fracking to extract shale gas is harmful to the environment.

A spokesman for the chemicals company said: "We operate to the highest safety and environmental standards and utterly refute the claims of a fringe, anti-progress minority."

    Team Sky declined to comment.

The figures also show there are currently only 40 charging points across York, with the council's plans for two new fast charging hyper hubs set to boost the numbers.

Last week it was announced East Yorkshire will be among the first to get an electric car charging forecourt.

The one in Bilton will have 24 bays and allow drivers to charge up in less than half an hour.

A "patchy" network of charging points is discouraging UK drivers from embracing electric cars, analysis suggests.

Dr Stephen Hall has been researching electric vehicles at Leeds University.

He says: "The real issue is, if you're going to put a charge point in, you want to charge a big battery quickly, which means you have to spend quite a lot of money upgrading a local grid and the charge points are quite expensive.

"And because electricity is so cheap, it's really difficult to get your money back from putting a charge point in."
