    There will be record prize money up for grabs at a squash tournament which is being held in Hull next month.

    The purse of $348,000 the largest since the British Open began in 1922, will be split equally between the men's and women's draws.

    The international tournament, known as the "Wimbledon of Squash," will take place at the University of Hull Sports and Fitness Centre from 20 to 26 May.

    A hairdressers in West Yorkshire was held up by knife-wielding thieves - now police have released a CCTV photograph of a man they want to trace.

    Suspects entered the salon in Shelf at around 16:45 on 21 March and threatened staff with a knife before making off with a box containing cash.

    No-one was injured in the incident on Witchfield Hill but staff were left shaken and police are appealing for information.

    West Yorkshire Police say a man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been released while investigations continue.

    A World War One trawler which has been rusting in the South Atlantic for decades, could form part of Hull's bid to be recognised as "Yorkshire’s Maritime City" after permission was given for it to return home.

    The Viola currently sits abandoned on the island South Georgia, but it's claimed the authorities there have given clearance for it to return to Hull.

    Associated British Ports has agreed to provide a site where she can be restored and a space has been set aside for the ship at Hull's North End Shipyard.

    The council hope the boat could be part of a £27.4m scheme to celebrate Hull's links with the sea and bring more tourists into the city.

    A special Viola gin has been made to try and raise money to bring the ship back to Hull, where she set sail from more than 100 years ago.

    Plans for a new 94-home estate on former green belt land in Rotherham have been unanimously approved by councillors, despite 200 objections.

    There'll also be a children's play area and contributions totaling around £250,000 to help improve the local primary school and sustainable transport, as well as cash for Treeton Parish Council.

  6. Houses in Ripon could be made with sinkhole 'escape paths'published at 16:01 British Summer Time 4 April 2019

    A new housing development in Ripon could be built with "escape paths" so occupants can get out if a sinkhole appears underneath.

    The development, proposed for Allhallowgate and Finkle Street has been re-designed to withstand a 20-metre sinkhole.

    Harrogate Borough Council's planning committee heard that "the probability of this is very, very low but we can not discount this".

    Ripon is one of the UK's most sinkhole-prone cities because it sits above a layer of water soluble rock leading to the formation of large underground caves.

    The picture above shows the 6-metre sinkhole which appeared in 2016, causing twelve properties in the cathedral city to be evacuated.

    Mark Finch from Leeds developer Rushbond PLC says: "Arguably this is where Leeds started commercially.

    "This was the building that was needed, wind and watertight, to sell cloth and on the city's historic streets it's quite significant."

    Police are investigating reports that a man has been approaching young teenage boys in Hull and telling them to get into his car.

    Patrols in the city have been increased after two "attempted abductions," which are believed to be connected.

    Two boys have reported being approached by a man in a dark-coloured car, who is described as "having tanned skin, possibly of Middle Eastern origin, aged between 30 and 40, of chubby build and bald".

    The first boy was approached on Borthwick Close at about 14:30 on Friday 8 March, the second was approached at about 22:00 on Tuesday 12 March on Norton Grove.

    Det Insp Jon Cross said: “Both boys did exactly as we would want them to. They didn’t get into the car and reported it to us as soon as possible and I would ask anyone else approached in this way to do the same."

    A fox had to be cut free today after getting her head stuck in an empty plastic tub in Mexborough.

    The distressed fox was found at about 06:00 this morning on Schofield Street.

    The RSPCA received a call from a local resident who "could hear something knocking outside their house and opened the door to see the fox thrashing around with the tub on her head".

    It is thought the fox was looking for something to eat when she got her head stuck in the container.

    Officers used bolt cutters, scissors and a knife to "very carefully" cut the opening of the container and prise it off the fox’s head.

    The fox, who was uninjured in the incident and found to be in a good condition, was released to return to her den.

    A woman's died after being rescued from a crashed car in West Yorkshire.

    Fire crews from Knaresborough and Harrogate used hydraulic cutting equipment to cut her from the car, after it was involved in a collision with another vehicle at about 22:00 last night.

    It happened on the A168 between Kirk Deighton and Walshford near Wetherby.

    Officers say a red Vauxhall Astra, travelling north and a silver Volkswagen Polo, travelling south, collided just after the flyover near the Bridge Hotel in Walshford.

    The 68-year-old woman travelling as a rear seat passenger in the Volkswagen, died at the scene.

    The driver of the Astra, a man in his 20s sustained serious, potentially life changing injuries.

    The driver of the Volkswagen, a woman in her 30s was also seriously injured, along with a male front-seat passenger, and a child travelling as a rear seat passenger.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them, so they can establish the full circumstances around the incident.

    One of Sheffield's leading Muslim scholars has offered advice for anyone going on pilgrimage to Mecca for Hajj on how to avoid being scammed.

    Qari Mohammed Ismail, says the duty to attend Hajj once in a lifetime is something than can be taken advantage of with some companies overcharging people who think they're being given a better experience.

    He said: "If anybody is telling you that they're going to make your Hajj five-star then they are not telling you the truth."

    The executive board member of Sheffield Federation of Mosques also said it was important to go with local groups who are registered both in this country and Saudi Arabia.

    A project in Sheffield says it's been able help older drinkers halve the amount of alcohol they consume.

    The Drink Wise support scheme is aimed at people over 50 in the city, who are said to often drink alone at home.

    The organisation claims that, six months after being discharged from the scheme, people are sticking to their new habit of drinking less.

    The University of Hull will give a prize celebrating community spirit and friendship in memory of student Libby Squire.

    The Libby Squire Recognition Award was set up after alumni raised more than £1,500 in memory of the philosophy student, who was found dead last month after going missing earlier this year.

    The award, which will be known locally as Libby's Prize, will be given "to recognise those who have gone above and beyond in the name of community spirit and friendship".

    The prize, set up after "the university family united during these last few dark months," will be awarded for the first time in July 2020, when the 21-year-old would have graduated.

    It is hoped enough money will be raised to offer a £300 prize annually for 21 years, "an award to celebrate every year of Libby’s life".

    Any extra money raised will go towards "the creation of a quiet, reflective space on campus that will support our students, staff, alumni and friends".

    A missing 16-year-old girl, who was last seen in Rotherham, has been found "safe and well".

    Police thanked members of the public for sharing an appeal to find the teenager, who went missing from her home in Derbyshire.

    BBC Look North presenter, Harry Gration has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant by the Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, Mrs Johanna Ropner.

    He'll assist the Lord Lieutenant in her duty as the official representative of the Queen across North Yorkshire – the largest Lieutenancy area in the country.

    Four other new appointees have been made, three men and two women.

    Harry Gration has been with the BBC for more than 40 years, initially as a sport and news reporter for Radio Leeds, through to his current role presenting Look North.

    He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to broadcasting in 2013.

    In recent years Harry's helped raise more than £1m for Sports Relief, including riding a tandem around the Tour de Yorkshire cycle route, a 139-mile three-legged walk around Yorkshire and pulling a sofa around Yorkshire.

    A Hull MP has called for improved access to mental health support for armed forces veterans and their families.

    Emma Hardy said former service personnel should be able to access Ministry of Defence mental health services for more than 12 months after finishing their service.

    The Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle said similar support should also be available for the families of veterans.

    Writing on Twitter, she said: "We need respect for veterans, but respect alone is not enough, warm words alone are not enough."
