    Ex-Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell has been found guilty of a safety offence relating to the Hillsborough disaster.

    The 69-year-old had responsibility for safety at Sheffield Wednesday's ground, where 96 Liverpool fans died following a crush.

    He had denied a safety breach relating to the 1989 disaster at Preston Crown Court.

    But the jury found him guilty of failing to discharge his duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act by a majority of 10 to two.

    A telescope developed by students in Yorkshire will be used by NASA to take images of the sun.

    The telescope, called the SunbYte, was part built with a 3D printer at the University of Sheffield and is being used to forecast solar activity.

    In September, the telescope will be sent 36km into the sky above New Mexico as part of a NASA balloon launch.

    Dr Istvan Ballai is involved in the project, he said: "We are going to see how the sun evolves, how it's changing and what is going on in its atmosphere."

    The MOD's looking for a new permanent base for the world famous display team following a decision to close their home at RAF Scampton in 2022.

    Now, plans have been revealed which indicate they might train in the skies above York, Malton, Knaresborough, Northallerton and Thirsk.

    It was confirmed last month that RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire was one of three sites being considered for the Red Arrows new home.

    Richmond MP Rishi Sunak said he had asked the defence secretary to consider RAF Leeming as the new base, adding it would be an "ideal fit".

    The MoD said: "No decisions on their future home have yet been made."

    The Labour politician, who served as an officer in the Parachute Regiment, said the footage "goes against the values and standards" of the British Army.

    The MP for Barnsley Central, who is also the mayor of the Sheffield City Region, welcomed an investigation into the clip.

    Two pedestrians have been hit by a car in Hull.

    One of the injured pedestrians is being treated in Hull Royal Infirmary after the incident at 08:45, although their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    The other pedestrian suffered minor injuries in the collision on James Reckitt Avenue.

    A trial to cut carbon emissions in a part of Calderdale in West Yorkshire is being proposed by the council.

    Calderdale Council declared a climate emergency in January, external and is set to begin with a trial plan in Sowerby Bridge

    The authority will also consider taking action to stop parents keeping their car engines running while they drop children off at school.

    Plans to improve air quality in Calderdale will be discussed later.

    The victim had been at Soyo on Rockingham Street and was standing outside the bar when he was hit in the face.

    South Yorkshire Police say he was assaulted by another man, who had also been inside the bar, who was accompanied by two men and two women.

    The victim then walked towards West Street, followed by the offender who is reported to have been shouting at him and attempting to hit him again.

    The incident happened at about 02:20 on Saturday 2 March.

    More than 30 firefighters were called out to the Masons Gin distillery in Aiskew near Bedale.

    The distillery used social media to thank all those involved, saying: "We’d like to thank everybody for their concern and well wishes following a fire at the distillery.

    Taxi drivers in East Yorkshire say assaults and fare-dodging has fallen since they were allowed to install CCTV cameras in their cars.

    Currently almost 200 of the 328 taxis and private hire vehicles in the area are fitted with CCTV.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council changed the rules in 2016 to permit CCTV.

    It was hoped it would protect cabbies from assaults and false allegations and protect passengers, including children and vulnerable adults.

    Drivers have told officials in Beverley that it's had a positive effect.

    The told the authority they feel safer and there have been fewer assaults and incidents of fare-dodging.

    It's now hoped that all private hire cars and taxis in East Yorkshire will be fitted with CCTV by this time next year.

    Police intercepted a van they believed to be returning from Sproatley "filled with stolen items" from homes and gardens.

  20. Halifax plaque to honour 'first modern lesbian'published at 09:13 British Summer Time 3 April 2019

    A blue plaque will be unveiled in Halifax later to honour the life of Anne Lister.

    The plaque at Shibden Hall is being unveiled on the anniversary of her birth in 1791.

    Angela Claire who looks after Anne Lister's home Shibden Hall says: "She was keen to make the hall grand, so she landscaped the gardens, added two new wings, a new gatehouse, ponds and fountains, so she could entertain and show off in a way."

    In February this year a reworded plaque to Anne Lister was unveiled at Holy Trinity Church in York, where she took the sacrament in 1834 with her lover, Ann Walker.

    The first plaque was taken down because it described her as "gender non-conforming," prompting an online petition to change the wording to lesbian.

    Lister's journals, mostly written at her home in Halifax, documented her life and lesbian relationships and were recognised as a "pivotal" document by the United Nations in 2011.

    A new BBC TV drama based on the diaries is due to air this year.
