    A street in Sheffield was cordoned off for five hours last night after the discovery of a grenade.

    The "Airsoft" grenade, which was found on Firshill Crescent, posed no threat to the public, according to police.

    Insp Peter Heginbotham said: “I am aware this incident may have caused alarm and inconvenience to the community and I would like to offer my reassurance.

    "The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team has attended the scene and disposed of the item which has now been identified as an Airsoft grenade.

    "We are taking this incident very seriously and will be investigating the circumstances around it."

    Thieves tried to steal cigarettes from a delivery driver outside a shop in Bridlington this morning and police are linking it to a robbery a month earlier.

    A driver was threatened by a pair of men, one wielding a metal bar, as he made a drop on Flamborough Road at 07:00.

    The driver suffered a minor injury to his hand, with the pair running off empty handed, escaping by scaling a fence on Lamplugh Lane.

    Police say this is linked to a similar incident on Thursday 7 March, when a single suspect stole 6,000 cigarettes from another driver after threatening him.

    Det Sgt Carl Sweeting said: “During both of these incidents the suspects acted in the same way, were after the same goods, and escaped in the same direction from the same shop around the same time of day."

    A video taken from inside a helicopter shows a parent and child being winched to safety after becoming trapped on cliffs in East Yorkshire.

    The footage shows how the pair were rescued after becoming trapped at Cowden yesterday evening.

    Only 25.3% of registered voters returned a ballot compared to 47.7% in Kingston upon Thames, with the England average at 35%.

    Hull residents have until Friday to register for this year's elections, which is set to take place on Thursday 2 May.

    A army veteran who shattered his spine in a freak accident is dedicating his time to raise money for the children's ward at James Cook Hospital.

    Justin Henderson, originally from York, was a Sergeant in the Royal Logistic Corps until a freak accident in 2012 when he shattered his spine, causing him to lose all mobility.

    With support from Help for Heroes, external, Justin went from using a wheelchair to walking in just 10 months.

    The former Sergeant has now decided to undertake a 12-month fitness challenge to raise money for the children's ward at James Cook hospital and has already raised more than £800 through his Just Giving page, external.

    Today, he's been to the hospital to deliver a battery operated car for the kids to ride to their operations to ease their nerves.

    Justin said he's set himself the target of raising £10,000 for the ward because he believes it's good to help those who can't help themselves.

    He added: "Kids don't understand why they're ill and can't go home to see their families, it's heartbreaking to see."

  16. 'Alternate plan' to cuts for South Yorkshire firefighterspublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 9 April 2019

    Labour councillors on the South Yorkshire Fire Authority have put forward an alternative plan to the cuts being proposed by the fire service.

    Cuts to central government funding left the fire authority seeking to fill a £4m hole in their budget.

    The Fire Brigades Union (FBU), which represents firefighters, previously warned that the proposed cuts reducing the number of firefighters on engines, from five to four, were "absolutely unthinkable".

    The authority is now expected to consider looking at costs in other areas, such as senior salaries and expensive non-essential purchases, as well considering using its reserves of over £20 million.

    The FBU will continue to campaign against the cuts as the amended budget plan goes for consultation.

    The legendary Dickie Bird has donated more money to the Children's Heart Surgery Fund in Leeds.

    The charity works alongside the unit at the Leeds General Infirmary, supporting children and adults with congenital heart defects from across Yorkshire.

    The former cricket umpure has already handed over £30,000 and today he's donated a further £20,000.

  18. Sub Focus to play Hull's 'alternative' end of year ballpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 9 April 2019

    The first acts have been announced for an "alternative" end of year ball for students in Hull.

    Organisers describe it as the "summer party to end all parties" and it will take place at the Polar Bear, the Welly and the Asylum nightclub.

    Drum and bass star Sub Focus, indie band the Pigeon Detectives and DJ Jaguar Skills are the first three acts to be announced.

    A total of 30 acts will be performing as part of the event, called the End, which is expected to start at 14:00 on the 25 May and go on until 03:00 the following day.

    According to a Facebook page for the event, it will mark "the start of a new adventure, the end of another university year, the kick off of your summer break,the finale of your university experience".

    Eight men have denied raping a teenage girl in Sheffield on multiple occasions between 2010 and 2012.

    They appeared at Sheffield Crown Court earlier and entered not guilty pleas to all charges.

    A ninth man pleaded not guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

    All of the defendants were bailed until a trial date on 6 January.

    They are:

    • Usman Din, 34, of Seaton Crescent, Sheffield - charged with three counts of rape and one count of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation
    • Tony Ejoune, 60, of Pitt Lane, Sheffield - one count of rape
    • Shangar Ibrahimi, 29, of no fixed abode - one count of rape
    • Farhad Mirzaie, 29, of Ironside Road, Sheffield - two counts of rape
    • Kawan Omar Ahmed, 29, of Margate Drive, Sheffield - one count of rape
    • Saman Mohammed, 40, of Fox Street, Sheffield - one count of rape
    • Jasim Mohammed, 36, of Maxwell Way, Sheffield - three counts of rape
    • Nzar Anwar, 39, of Exeter Drive, Sheffield - one count of rape and one count of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice
    • Saba Mohammed, 40, of Faranden Road, Sheffield - one count of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
