    A man's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a gun was fired in a "targeted attack" in West Yorkshire at the weekend, police say.

    Officers arrested a 24-year-old man following the incident on Marina Terrace in Huddersfield on Saturday.

    Firearms officers were called to the scene in the early hours of the morning and confirmed there had been a discharge.

    Det Supt Nicola Bryar said: "Our investigation is at an early stage but we believe this incident was a targeted attack and no-one was injured.

    "It’s understood this incident is linked to a report of criminal damage to a vehicle at the location earlier."

    Anyone with any information about the shooting is being urged to contact police.

    A 20-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested after a racially offensive message was sent to a Wigan Athletic footballer on Twitter, police say.

    The man handed himself into Blackpool Police Station on Saturday evening, Lancashire Constabulary said.

    He has been released under investigation.

    Drivers are being warned they could face delays as work gets under way on one of East Yorkshire's busiest roads today.

    The £3.9m scheme to improve traffic flow at the Shiptonthorpe roundabout on the A1079 could take up to eight months, according to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

    The four-way roundabout is a bottleneck at peak times, with the improvement works converting the road into five lanes, the council says.

    The use of four or five-way traffic lights will be restricted to evenings and overnight, according to the council.

    A major extension to the main terminal building at Leeds Bradford Airport moves a step closer today as a groundbreaking ceremony's held to mark the start of work on the site.

    Plans approved by Leeds City Council include the construction of an extension to the main airport terminal building which will include larger immigration and baggage reclaim areas, improved departure gate facilities, and more places to eat, drink, and sit.

    The work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020.

    South Yorkshire football clubs are celebrating their success this morning after winning an array of awards at the English Football League Awards.

    Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp was recognised with the Moment of the Season award at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

    The 33-year-old became the leading goalscorer in the EFL this century in January when he surpassed Rickie Lambert with his 220th career strike.

    Sharp was also named in the EFL Team of the Season, made up of players from across all three divisions and managed by his Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder.

    Will Vaulks was named the Professional Footballers Association Player in the Community for his work with Rotherham United and Bluebell Wood.

    Doncaster Rovers was named the Family Club of the Year and Rovers players Herbie Kane and John Marquis were named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Year.

    Meanwhile, Matty Blair, who also plays for Doncaster Rovers, was named League One Community Player of the Year.

    Barnsley players Alex Mowatt, Cameron McGeehan, Ethan Pinnock and Adam Davies were also named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Year, managed by Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.

    Leeds Rhinos have released assistant coach James Lowes from his contract so he can start a new role "outside of rugby league".

    The former Great Britain hooker, 49, returned to the club as first-team coach in July when Kevin Sinfield became director of rugby.

    He and Sinfield secured Super League safety last season before David Furner was appointed head coach in September.

    Leeds are currently bottom of the table after losing eight of their 10 games.

    A Sheffield school at the centre of a row over plans to close its sixth form has been issued with a notice to improve its financial position.

    The Education & Skills Funding Agency has written to Bradfield School saying its finances are "poor and worsening".

    The letter comes after staff and pupils staged a strike over the proposed closure of the sixth form.

    The school said it hoped to balance the budget "in the very near future".

  13. Teenage girls arrested over boy's assault in Hullpublished at 07:26 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Two teenage girls have been arrested in Hull on suspicion of assault following reports of videos on social media showing a teenage boy being assaulted.

    The girls, aged 15 and 16, can't legally be identified.

    Det Insp Simon Vickers, who is leading the investigation, said: "The girls have been arrested and are helping us with our enquiries."

    The boy and his family are being supported by specialist officers and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated, according to police.

    Officers have taken steps to have the videos removed, with Det Insp Vickers asking for them "not to be shared further as to do so may be also be committing an offence".

    A tribute to Libby Squire, the Hull University student whose body was found in the Humber estuary in March seven weeks after she went missing, is among designs painted on houses in the city.

    Graffiti artists have painted more than 20 homes earmarked for demolition.

    More than 100 artists took part in the two-day event in the Preston Road area of Hull.

    Fire chiefs said a similar event held in 2018 had led to a reduction in anti-social behaviour and arson attacks.

    Hull City Council provided 22 houses to organisers Bankside Gallery, who arranged for designs to be created by artists including Dilk, Penfold, Marcus Method, and Krek.
