  3. 'Brown and broken wasteland': Appeal to give peat a chancepublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 9 April 2019

    Cathy Killick
    Journalist, BBC Look North

An appeal's being launched to help protect a vast swathe of the Yorkshire Dales which is the size of the Isle of Wight.

    Peat

About 40,000 hectares of peatland at Langstrothdale is under threat from erosion, having been damaged in the past.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust says saving the peat, which is centuries old and metres deep, will involve many months of hard physical work, but is vital not just for Yorkshire but for the rest of the planet.

Healthy peatlands help with flood prevention and store carbon, but when they start to erode the carbon rises into the atmosphere, which impacts on the climate.

    Peat

The trust says: "For thousands of years, peatlands have stretched across Yorkshire.

"Our most ancient and iconic landscapes should be a mosaic of vibrant greens, reds and purples - instead, they are a brown and broken wasteland."

The trust is now appealing for money to pay for work to halt and repair the erosion.
