    A drink-driver's been jailed for almost six years for killing a North Yorkshire schoolgirl in a hit-and-run crash.

    Kaitlin Mitchell, 12, was seriously hurt after she was knocked down while crossing the road in Byram and she died later in hospital.

    Gary Smith (pictured above), 37, of Summerfield Drive, Brotherton, admitted causing death by careless driving while over the drink-drive limit.

    He appeared at York Crown Court where he was jailed for five years and nine months and was banned from driving for seven and a half years.

    The schoolgirl (pictured above) lived with her grandparents Kathleen and Brian Mitchell before her death in September 2017.

    Mr Mitchell said: "I know they say you have to forgive and forget, but having a granddaughter taken from you is the worst thing there is. I'll never forgive him."

    The 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of outraging public decency after the incident at Clifton Park.

    He has been released on bail with police appealing for information while they continue to investigate the incident which happened at about 17:00 on Monday 15 April.

    Cycling star Mark Cavendish has been confirmed for this year's Tour de Yorkshire and says the event is particularly special for him as his mum lives in Harrogate.

    The 33-year-old, originally from the Isle of Man, said he enjoyed taking part in the competition for the first time last year and is excited "to race in one of the most beautiful places in the world".

    He said: “It always blows my mind to see the incredible support of the fans. With some of my family in Yorkshire, it makes it so special and I can’t wait to see them all again.”

    A mum from Leeds says she's determined to see something positive come from the death of her teenage son, who was killed while riding his bike without any lights on.

    It's illegal to cycle on a public road after dark, unless you have bike lights on.

    Now, Rebecca Roe, whose son Charlie died after colliding with a van in October, has launched a petition to make it illegal to sell bikes without pre-fitted lights.

    She says: "I don't want Charlie to have lost his life for no reason.

    "I've started the petition to try to prevent someone else having to go through what we're going through - to try to make something positive come out of losing Charlie."

    Dates have been set for a series of strikes over pay by catering staff at an NHS trust in South Yorkshire.

    Unison said its workers at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust were not receiving a nationally agreed pay rise for NHS staff after their jobs were transferred to a private contractor.

    Strikes are due to take place between 1 and 3 May, 7-9 May, 15-17 May and 20-22 May.

    A woman was found "in a very distressed state" on Beverley's Westwood last night after an incident which police are treating as a suspected sexual assault.

    Police have issued a public appeal for information about the incident and say there may have been a lot of people around the area at the time after a meeting at the racecourse yesterday.

    Officers found the woman in woodlands near the racecourse at about 17:00 on Thursday after reports of people being concerned for her safety.

    The emergency services attended the scene and, following initial inquiries, police put up a cordon to preserve the scene.

    The woman was "immediately given the appropriate support" by specialist officers and medical professionals as the investigation got under way, police say.

    Det Ch Insp Craig Nicholson said: "Owing to the distressed state of the woman last night, we still need to carry out to further inquiries to find out the exact circumstances behind this."

    Drone pilots have been warned to keep away from the railway or risk prosecution following an incident involving Flying Scotsman.

    Network Rail and British Transport Police issued the alert after footage was posted online appearing to show a drone flying dangerously close to the railway.

    It happened as the world famous steam locomotive, which is based in York, passed through Surrey.

    Helen Yorke, route crime manager for Network Rail's Wessex route, said: "This was a very concerning incident which put the safety of passengers, railway staff and members of the public at risk.

    It follows another incident at Grosmont in North Yorkshire in 2016 when a camera fell from a drone and hit a carriage being pulled by the engine.

    Protests are being staged by union members outside Barnsley Hospital and at Winifred Holtby, Tweendykes and Kingswood schools in Hull.
