    A North Yorkshire MP who gave up plastic for Lent will take part in a debate on plastic recycling in the House of Commons this evening.

    Rachael Maskell, Labour MP for York Central, stopped buying anything wrapped in plastic or made of plastic during Lent.

    Ms Maskell says she's been using local markets and baking her own bread to avoid buying single use plastics.

    The MP says: "I'm committing to work to turn around recycling, to continue my war on plastic and move climate change up the political agenda."

    Visitors to the North York Moors are being asked to be extra vigilant and not have fires of barbecues.

    The North York Moors National Park Authority says it's issued a fire alert because vegetation is dry.

    It follows two serious moor fires at Marsden and Ilkley in West Yorkshire over the weekend.

    Bernie McLinden, a senior ranger, says: "Our fire alert is really to warn people that it's very dry, it's a bit of a tinderbox at the moment.

    "People should be careful not to have fires or barbecues and if they do see fire or smoke on the moors should phone 999 without hesitation."

    The life of Stephen Lawrence is being honoured in Hull today, 26 years after the teenager was murdered in a racist attack in South London.

    Mr Lawrence was set upon by a gang, stabbed and left to die in Eltham on the evening of 22 April 1993.

    Humberside Police has organised a service at the Amazing Grace Chapel on Beverley Road at 18:30, to look at his life and the relationship between minority ethnic communities and the police.

    Yesterday was the inaugural Stephen Lawrence Day.

    The Humberside force says: "Together this evening we will look back at Stephen’s life, the challenges his family and the wider community faced and the positive changes that have come about as a result of their determination."

    Community cohesion officer, PC Danny Fleming says: "Stephen's murder had a huge impact on the police and how we engage and encourage diverse communities to join us.

    "The Home Secretary at the time, Jack Straw, said the incident which led to Stephen's death and the aftermath of that, was one of the 'most impactive events in modern and policing history'."

    Dampening down is continuing this morning at the site of a second blaze on moorland in West Yorkshire.

    The fire at Marsden Moor started on Sunday on one of the hottest days of the year and followed a huge blaze on Ilkley Moor on Saturday.

    The West Yorkshire Fire Service is asking people to "take extraordinary care if using outdoor spaces" and say the "risk of wildfire is high".

    Two men, aged 34 and 57, who were arrested at the scene of a suspicious death in South Yorkshire, have been released under investigation, police say.

    Emergency services were called to Cudworth Post Office on Barnsley Road late on Friday, following reports a woman in her 60s was in cardiac arrest.

    Formal identification of the victim, who died at the scene, has not yet taken place.

    Police said a post-mortem examination had taken place and proved inconclusive.

    Officers are asking people not to speculate about who the woman might be and want anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

    Two men have been killed in a car crash in Hull, police say.

    It happened yesterday morning at about 07:00.

    The black BMW the men were travelling in hit a tree on Cavendish Road.

    Humberside Police say: "Although the men have not been formally identified, their families have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this sad time."

    Officers want anyone who saw the car before the collision to get in touch.

  10. Rotherham crash: Three held after pedestrian diespublished at 06:45 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    Three people are being questioned after a man was hit by a car and killed in South Yorkshire.

    Adam Cumpsty, 30, was walking on Broad Street, Rotherham, at about 22:30 on Friday when he was struck.

    He died at the scene.

    Police said two vehicles were seen driving in the direction of Parkgate when one of the vehicles hit him.

    In a statement, Mr Cumpsty's family said: "Adam was a much loved husband, brother, uncle and son, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him."

    Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or who may have been in the area at the time.

  11. Marsden Moor fire 'started by barbecue'published at 06:30

    A second blaze broke out on moorland in West Yorkshire on one of the hottest days of the year.

    The fire at Marsden Moor started on Sunday and was "likely" to have been caused by a barbecue at Easter Gate, the National Trust said.

    It has now spread to Denshaw in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, the fire service said.

    Firefighters also remain on Ilkley Moor damping down a blaze which spread over 25,000 sq metres on Saturday.
