    One of Hull's famous cream coloured telephone boxes has been re-painted in rainbow colours ahead of the city's Pride event later this month.

    The phone box, near the Maritime Museum, got a new lick of paint before Pride in Hull, which takes place on 20 July.

    It was given a colourful makeover by communications company KCOM, which operates the city's phone boxes.

    Sheffield's Jarvis Cocker has commemorated the famous Kinder Scout mass trespass with a new art trail.

    The 1932 protest saw hundreds of ramblers walk on to private land on Kinder Scout in Derbyshire to assert their "right to roam".

    Following the protest, five men were arrested and imprisoned.

    The former Pulp singer's BE KINDER walk starts at the Penny Pot cafe next to the station at Edale, where walkers can hear a jukebox which plays songs inspired by passion and protest.

    The project is part of the National Trust's People's Landscape programme and will run from Saturday until 15 September.

    The trail "encourages people to think about the importance of being kind to this incredible natural habitat", according to the trust.

    The Lionesses are also a distinctly northern group, with the majority of the 23-strong squad born in north west or north east England or Yorkshire.

    Not a single player was born in London, the East or the south west of England, with just three born in the south east.

    A man's been arrested after a police pursuit on the busy A19 road in North Yorkshire.

    Yesterday's chase happened after a digger was stolen in York and taken away by a truck towing it on a trailer.

    North Yorkshire Police Operations Support Unit tweeted the digger was spotted on the A19 near Escrick about 45 minutes after it was stolen.

    Police say they used "tactical pursuit and containment tactics" to box the van and digger in on the Selby bypass.

    Tottenham have signed Leeds United winger Jack Clarke and immediately loaned him back to the Championship club for the 2019-20 season.

    Clarke is Spurs' first signing since Brazil forward Lucas Moura joined from Paris St-Germain in January 2018.

    The 18-year-old has signed a deal with the Premier League club until 2023.

    It is understood a fee in the region of £10m has been agreed, with further payments scheduled if certain clauses are met.

    "I'm delighted to join Tottenham and in the short term I'll be giving my all to hopefully help Leeds win promotion," said Clarke.

    Clarke came through the youth system at the West Yorkshire club and made his first-team debut on 6 October last year against Brentford.

    A long-running campaign encouraging councils to let neatly-mown grass verges become mini meadows where wildflowers and wildlife can flourish appears to be building up a head of steam.

    Since 2013, Plantlife has been telling authorities the move could help them save money and boost their green credentials.

    Several have taken the message on board. An eight-mile "river of flowers" alongside a major route in Rotherham was widely praised on social media recently, external and roadside meadows have also popped up in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Birmingham, Newcastle and Sheffield.

    A 29-year-old man has died after jumping into the River Don near Doncaster at the weekend.

    South Yorkshire Police say they were called to a stretch of river, near Conisbrough, after receiving reports a man had gone into the water to "cool down" at about 15:55 on Saturday.

    A force representative said underwater search teams found the man's body close to where he’d gone missing the following morning.

    Paul Jubb, 19, is set to make his Wimbledon debut after being announced as one of the wildcards last week.

    Jubb, who was born in York and brought up by his grandmother in Hull, faces Portugal's Joao Sousa at 15:30 this afternoon.

    His former PE Teacher at Hull's Malet Lambert School, Jon Robinson, says: "This is hopefully a massive stepping-stone on the way to huge things for him.

    "He's progressed so much more quickly than even he thought the could."

  10. Leeds MP questions Whirlpool and consumer safety groupspublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 2 July 2019

    Bosses from electrical company Whirlpool will be questioned by a Leeds MP later about the safety of their tumble dryers.

    Parliament's Business Select Committee, which is chaired by Rachel Reeves, started an inquiry after a fault in some dryers was linked to hundreds of fires.

    The fault was blamed for at least 750 fires over an 11-year period, according to the government.

    This morning the inquiry will focus on the effectiveness of the company’s response to ongoing safety concerns about its tumble-dryers.

    The Committee will also hear from a panel of witnesses, including representatives from safety campaigners Electrical Safety First, the London Fire Brigade, and consumer association, Which?

    A few weeks ago staff at the Bonus Arena in Hull made what they say was an "egg-cellent discovery," on their roof - a mallard, a nest and four eggs.

    Since then they've kept a close eye on their feathered friend to ensure there was no "fowl play."

    Now they've announced the arrival of four baby chicks.

    The relentlessly punning staff say: "We wanted to get a sneak-beak at the new ducklings before they flew the nest and went to their new home.

    "With some cutting edge duck-nology the RSPCA Hull came along and discovered they were all fit and healthy, so no need for a ducktor."

    The ducks are now said to be living at Princes Quay, where they are expected to make "a quackophony of noise in their new surroundings."

    A North Yorkshire man who admitted threatening to bomb Portsmouth's football ground during a match against Sunderland has been given a community order.

    Messages posted on Twitter spoke of shooting supporters and bombing Fratton Park.

    Kieran Richardson, 22, of Northallerton Road, Brompton, North Yorkshire, made the threats ahead of the League One play-off match on 16 May.

    His comments prompted the club to increase security measures.

    Tweets, which were deleted, referenced the May 2017 Manchester Arena attack in which 23 people died.

    They also referred to "Fratton Park going bang" and shooting Portsmouth fans.

    Beverley's Kyle Edmund is looking forward to his next Wimbledon tie after beating debutant Jaume Munar in his opening fixture.

    The British men's number one triumphed over Munar in a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win.

    At one stage during the match Munar hit a shot that hit a line judge on the head.

    Edmund will face another Spaniard - former world number seven Fernando Verdasco - in the next round.

    Police in South Yorkshire have warned the public that further action will be taken against 999 timewasters after a man called the emergency services asking for help rescuing his pet cockatoo from a tree.

    He phoned both the fire service and the police in the early hours of Monday morning, in what's being described as an example of the pressure on call handlers based at Atlas Court in Sheffield.

    Supt Bob Chapman said: "While these might sound like amusing stories, they’re certainly not funny to the people waiting in the queue with a genuine emergency to report."

    He said that South Yorkshire Police would be "taking a firm line" on individuals making nuisance or hoax calls, which could result in further action being taken.

    Tonnes of unwanted items donated by students leaving for the summer break are being snapped up for free in Leeds.

    The student-run Leave Leeds Tidy scheme is part of efforts to reduce the amount of rubbish dumped in the streets by departing students.

    Items include kettles, fridges, televisions, clothes, shoes and pots and pans, said organisers.

    The goods are given away to people with a low income in pop-up "free shops" at churches and community centres.

    Abdul Hannan, community engagement manager at Leeds University Union, said: "The intention is to not just think about recycling or upcycling but the students want to give something back to the city."

    "The scheme's been running for more than 10 years and it that time received more than 138 tonnes of goods which would otherwise have gone to landfill."

    A 12-year-old cyclist has suffered serious injuries in a collision with a coach in Harrogate, police say.

    It happened at 08:50 yesterday morning outside St Aiden's High School, in Oatlands Drive.

    The cyclist, a boy from Harrogate, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where his condition is described as "serious but stable."

    North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and says it particularly wants to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of the incident.

    A foot fetishist who crawled under cinema seats to touch the legs of young children has been jailed.

    Luke Merry, 25, of Lakeside Boulevard, Lakeside, Doncaster, had admitted two charges of sexual assault on a child under 13 and one offence of voyeurism.

    Merry, who is deaf but wears a cochlear implant, claimed he was looking for his earpiece at the Vue cinema in Leeds.

    Jailing him for 18 months Judge Simon Phillips said Merry's offending had a "profound effect" on the children.
