    An injured veteran has said he is "very, very proud" to have had the opportunity to travel to the top of 18m-high (59ft) scaffolding on to the roof of what was once Britain's biggest private home.

    Ben Parkinson, from Doncaster, went to the top of Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

    The lance bombardier, who was injured in a bomb attack in Afghanistan in 2006, was there to officially launch rooftop tours at the historic mansion.

    Members of the public will soon be able to access the high roof by climbing 135 steps to the top, or by using the fully accessible lift that Mr Parkinson travelled in.

    The vast mansion is currently encased in 700 tonnes of scaffolding as contractors attempt to replace its six-tennis-courts-sized main roof as part of the first phase of a £130 million programme to save the building.

    An East Yorkshire man who's beaten cancer five times is now a champion athlete.

    Dave Fletcher, 41, from Swanland, survived various types of the disease to take up the sport of duathlon - a race including cycling and running.

    Earlier this month, he took part in the European championships in Romania, where he won gold in his age group.

    He said: "I've always been known as the five times cancer kid. Now I'm known as European champion."

    Police investigating a violent robbery in Leeds city centre have released images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

    It happened last month when a 25-year-old man walking on Boar Lane was approached and assaulted by a man at about 02:30 on 22 June.

    The suspect punched and kicked the victim before making off with his mobile phone, a watch, a ring and cash.

    Officers say the victim sustained "serious facial injuries".

    The West Yorkshire force says it would like to trace the man pictured as he may have information valuable to the investigation.

    A car driver was taken to hospital after his vehicle crossed the central reservation and hit a bus travelling in the other direction in Sheffield.

    The white BMW was travelling out of the city towards the M1 when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

    The driver suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to hospital following the crash on Saturday night.

    There were no passengers on the bus which was hit and the driver was shaken but injured, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Police in York have issued an urgent appeal to help find a man missing from the city.

    Jimmy Hebbron, 33, was last seen at about 11:30 this morning in the Chapelfields/Acomb area.

    He's described at 6ft 6ins tall, with a bald/shaved head, a bushy beard and black heavy-framed glasses.

    It's believed he is wearing a yellow t-shirt, dark grey joggers and black trainers.

    Officers say they are are growing "extremely concerned" for his safety and are appealing to the public to help find him.

    Anyone who has seen him or knows where he is should contact North Yorkshire Police.

    Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis was speaking after Boris Johnson announced a high-speed Leeds to Manchester rail route.

    Mr Jarvis said: "It's fine to talk about Northern Powerhouse Rail and the railways. But what about our bus services?

    "Millions of people across the north of England will commute on bus services that are simply not fit for purpose."

    The full details of the new rail route would be published in the autumn, according to the Prime Minister.

    An East Yorkshire woman says she has to make a 400-mile round-trip to receive vital treatment for her MS.

    Leila Ives, 31, from Brough, was diagnosed with the disease 18 months ago and claims she's been told the treatment she needs to maintain as much of a normal life as possible isn't available in Hull.

    In order to get access to the drug, Ocrelizumab, she has to travel to London, which is a 200-mile journey in each direction.

    She says she feels like the "middle man" having to go "back and forth" between doctors in Hull and the capital.

    Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust says Ocrelizumab is available in the city, and is "offered to patients locally when it is felt to be clinically appropriate to do so".

    In a statement, the trust said: "Anyone who is unhappy or has concerns about a particular course of treatment recommended for them is encouraged to discuss this with their consultant or specialist in the first instance."

    A cyclist who died in York earlier this month following a collision with a car has been named by police.

    The victim was 29-year-old James Oliver Thomas Moore-Carnell of Stockton Lane, York.

    Speaking about James, also known as Moorey, his family said: “James was a kind, honest and genuine person with a heart of gold.

    "He was a very hard-working young man who was respected and loved by all who met and knew him.

    “He lived life to the full and will always be remembered as a much-loved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend.”

    The collision happened just before 13:00 on Sunday 14 July on Stockton Lane and involved a black Toyota Auris and a black and gold bicycle.

    The driver of the Auris, a 37-year-old man, was arrested and has been released under investigation.

    The North Yorkshire force says anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage of the incident should get in touch.

  16. Bradford men to face trial accused of terrorism offencespublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    Two men from West Yorkshire are to face trial next year accused of terrorism offences.

    Mohammed Shehzad, 21, and Safaan Ali, 18, both from Bradford, appeared at Oxford Crown Court (pictured), via videolink from HMP Wandsworth, for a preliminary hearing.

    Mr Ali, of Fairbank Road, faces eight counts of possessing material likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

    Mr Shehzad, of Upper Woodlands Road, is charged with disseminating terrorist publications.

    Judge Mr Justice Sweeney said the trial was expected to last up to three weeks and would be heard by Judge Tom Bayliss QC.

    The two men were remanded into custody and will face a plea and trial preparation hearing on 11 November at Leeds Crown Court.

    Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a Sheffield man.

    Nadeem Qureshi's body was found on Station Road, Deepcar, last Wednesday.

    The 40-year-old died of multiple injuries, a post-mortem examination found.

    Two Sheffield men, aged 23 and 34, were arrested yesterday and one further Sheffield man, aged 18, was arrested this morning, all on suspicion of murder.

    The 23-year-old has been released on bail, with the 34-year-old and 18-year-old remaining in police custody.

    Two men, aged 30 and 48, who were arrested last week, have been released on bail, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Police investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy from Wakefield say they don't believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

    Elliot Burton was last seen on Harewood Road in Eastmoor at about 09:30 on Thursday.

    Officers were called to a Boundary Lane, Normanton, this morning after a member of the public saw the body of a male in water.

    The force say Mr Burton's family has been informed.

    Police are trying to find a driver seen getting out of car and running off after hitting a tree and a wall in Hull yesterday morning.

    It's feared the man could be badly injured after the crash on Witty Street at about 06:00, which left parts of the silver Vauxhall Insignia scattered across the road.

    Humberside Police have carried out checks but have been unable to locate the man and they are now appealing for him to get in touch with them.
