CCTV footage was shown to Leeds Crown Court of PC Liam Stewart pushing 18-year-old Louis McAndrew against the shutters of a shop in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield and hitting him.

The jury was told that Stewart, 33, has insisted he was acting in self-defence.

Mr McAndrew was with a group of Chesterfield fans on their way to see their team play at Sheffield Wednesday when the incident started near Hillsborough Corner on 8 August 2017.

Ian Brook, prosecuting, told the court: "We say the defendant went over the top in his dealings with this youth.

"What he did in delivering those three punches - in particular the last one - was quite unreasonable and totally disproportionate to any contact the complainant made to him or any future threat he may have perceived as imminent."

Mr Brook said the jury will hear that people Mr McAndrew was with were associated with a group "commonly referred to as football hooligans", but Mr McAndrew denies being attached to the group.

Mr Stewart, of Hoyland, Barnsley, denies assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The trial was adjourned until Thursday.

  12. 'Claudia's Law' comes into forcepublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

A new law comes into force today allowing relatives of missing people to take control of their finances after 90 days or more.

    Claudia LawrenceImage source, Family

"Claudia's Law" is named after the North Yorkshire chef Claudia Lawrence who disappeared from her home in York 10 years ago.

Ms Lawrence's father, Peter, said it would be a great help to thousands of families.

Previously, when someone went missing their family had no legal right to step in and manage their affairs.

Instead, families could only take over the financial matters if they declared them dead, adding emotional pressure at an already difficult time.

The 26-foot high (8m) Knife Angel was made by the British Ironwork Centre and has been touring the country, appearing in cities including Liverpool, Hull, and Birmingham.

But, Councillor Paul Wood, cabinet member for community safety, has taken the decision not to bring the sculpture to the city, saying the artwork had divided opinion.

“Mums United were in favour of it but other groups were not, there were very mixed views," he said.

"Some people felt it was distasteful and I don’t want to offend anyone.

“Because I couldn’t get a consensus I have taken the decision not to bring it to the city."

The 100,000 weapons forming the Knife Angel have either been confiscated or surrendered to police.

A petition set up by the cousin of eight-year-old Mylee Billingham, who was stabbed to death by her father in 2018, has been started to reverse the decision.

Haylee Lowe, 25, from Heeley said: “I want to bring this magnificent statue to my own city as knife crime has affected me but also so many in Sheffield. I hope it would work as a deterrent or even just a wake-up call to anyone involved in knife crime.”
