    Residents in a part of Hull are being asked to look after nearby flood defences, following a spate of criminal damage and vandalism.

    A newly-built nature area in Orchard Park, off Danepark Road, is part of the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme, pictured above.

    More than 4,000 letters have now been sent out, urging locals to take care of the lake and fishing pond.

    Over 1,000 homes were damaged in devastating floods there in 2007.

    A child has been airlifted to hospital after a crash in York.

    Police were called to the Peasholme Green area of York at about 14:35 on Wednesday after a report of a collision between a child and a vehicle.

    The roads around Peasholme Green and The Stonebow were closed while emergency services attended the scene.

    The child was taken to Leeds General Infimary with what has been described as serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

    Fire crews spent most of yesterday tackling a blaze at a barn in Sheffield, with over 30 firefighters being called in to help.

    There were no serious injuries, according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, whose crews were called at about 05:00 to the fire on Pea Fields Lane in Bromley.

    There's a fresh call for the Prime Minister to turn his recent words on high-speed rail for West Yorkshire into action.

    Boris Johnson has pledged to prioritise funding for the Northern Powerhouse Rail project - also known as HS3 - which estimates suggest would cost £39bn.

    Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe says a city centre stop would boost the northern economy by £15bn.

    "We've always said that Bradford city centre needs to be a stop on that line", she said.

    "Transport for the North agree with us and it's just getting the city centre element of that buttoned-down and getting government to agree to it."

    Hundreds of dead fish have been found in a canal near Barnsley, prompting concerns from local residents.

    Barsley Council, which owns the Elsecar Canal near Brampton, says the incident is natural following low oxygen levels in the water after the recent hot weather.

    Reacting to the council's post on Facebook about the fish, some people said the water turned "blood red", with "hundreds of fish" floating on the water.

    The Environment Agency said it was investigating, but most fish appeared healthy.

  6. CCTV appeal after man attacked with 'hammer' in Hullpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Police have released CCTV footage of a group of people they want to speak to after a man was hit in the face with a "hammer" in Hull.

    The 25-year-old man was standing at a bus stop when he was approached by a group men who allegedly struck him in the face with an object thought to be a hammer.

    The victim suffered a fractured cheekbone, injured nose and a cut to his left eyebrow after the suspected attack at about 22:00 on Friday 7 June.

    His friend intervened and the men fled the scene of the incident on Holderness Road, near the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness Church.

    Humberside Police want to identify four "possible suspects", who may be in their teens, shown in the following video:

    A man's been rescued from the River Aire in Leeds this morning after being seen drifting downstream.

    He was pulled out of the water underneath Wellington Bridge at about 07:30 by firefighters.

    Water rescue crews from Hunslet Fire Station say the man was conscious and breathing.

    He was handed over to paramedics on scene for further treatment, the fire service says.

  9. Clean-up continues after Yorkshire Dales flash floodingpublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    The clean-up is continuing in part of the Yorkshire Dales after torrential rain and flash floods destroyed bridges, stranded motorists, washed parts of roads away and flooded homes and businesses.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it received about 165 calls to flooding in Leyburn and Reeth on Tuesday evening.

    Here's how the North Yorkshire village of Bellerby is coping:

    A flood warning for Arkle Beck at Reeth, external and Low Fremington remains in place, according to the Environment Agency.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire this Thursday morning, most services appear to be running to time.

    However, if you're planning to travel between Skipton and Carlisle, be aware that there are still problems on that route.

    A landslip between Dent and Ribblehead is causing disruption, with trains currently unable to run between Kirkby Stephen and Ribblehead.

    Trains can, however run between Ribblehead and Skipton/Leeds (in both directions) and between Carlisle and Kirkby Stephen (in both directions)

    Disruption is expected to continue until at least 11:30 on Thursday, according to National Rail Enquiries, external.

    Elsewhere, the 09:08 Doncaster to Hull via Selby service has been cancelled.

  11. Doncaster murder trial: Drug dealer 'was at mum's house'published at 08:00 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    A drug dealer accused of killing a boxer has said he was at his mum's house at the time of the shooting and had "nothing to do with it".

    Tom Bell, 21, was shot in the chest and abdomen through a pub window in Balby, Doncaster, on 17 January.

    He died later at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

    Joseph Bennia, 27, is on trial for Mr Bell's murder at Sheffield Crown Court. His drug-dealing partner Scott Gocoul, 30, also denies murder.

    The trial continues.

    Highways teams are working round the clock clearing roads and inspecting bridges following yesterday's severe flooding in parts of the Yorkshire Dales.

    North Yorkshire County Council says staff are in the process of "carefully inspecting bridges and highways to ensure they're safe for public use," following what's been described as by the Met Office as a “very rare weather event”.

    About 100mm of rain fell yesterday in parts of Richmondshire, with the Leyburn, Bellerby and Grinton areas particularly badly hit.

    Grinton Moor Bridge, near Reeth, has collapsed meaning the Grinton to Leyburn road remains closed.

    The Met Office has issued a further yellow "be aware" weather warning for today, with lightning and further heavy downpours expected.

    North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie said: “We are working hard to remove mud and other debris which has been washed onto roads during downpours and would urge motorists to remain vigilant and drive with caution.”

    Police are looking for a man who tried to grab a four-year-old boy in front of his house near Scarborough.

    It happened yesterday at about 16:00 in the Middle Deepdale area.

    After being disturbed by the boy’s father, the man jumped into the back seat of a dark blue estate vehicle being driven by another person and then sped off.

    The man is described as white, in his late 30s, of slim build, about 6ft 1in tall and he was wearing a white T-shirt and grey shorts.

    Anyone with information or CCTV or dashcam footage taken in the area at the time, is being asked to contact the North Yorkshire force.

    The University of Hull has today been hit by a power cut after a cable was damaged.

    There's been a loss of power to a number of buildings in the western part of the campus.

    Northern Powergrid are due to attend the site and carry out repairs, although it's unclear how long this will take.

    In a Twitter post, the University of Hull said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
