Ideal Standard, which has been in the city since 1936, says the decision was not taken lightly and it's not a reflection of the work force in Hull.

But, the GMB trade union has called the move "another nail in coffin" for UK manufacturing.

Dave Oglesby, GMB organiser, said: "The lack of investment in the site over recent years has had a major impact.

"Ideal Standard's loyal staff have worked hard to help build the company up. Now Ideal Standard are happy to send their jobs down the plughole."

The firm's managing director, Stephen Ewer, said the company understood it was difficult news for everyone involved, but customer service would stay in the city.

Mr Ewer said: "This proposal is not related to the quality of work or the skilled people in our Hull manufacturing site and we will work with those affected to minimise the impact as much as possible."

Local communities need to be vigilant and report any information that could help police, the firm says.

  20. Licensing bid fails for York 'retro' arcade games barpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 5 September 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans for a new bar and restaurant in York city centre featuring retro arcade games, air hockey and pool tables have been ditched.

    Cumberland StreetImage source, Google

Members of the team behind the proposed Playhouse Bar, which was due to open on Cumberland Street (pictured), say they are "tens of thousands of pounds" out of pocket after they were unable to secure a licence for the venue.

The company took over the unit, formerly home to the Cat’s Pyjamas Indian street food restaurant, earlier this year and revamped the interior.

Richard Thorpe, from Playhouse, said they understood there was already a licence in place for the premises, but then they discovered that wasn't the case.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police and City of York Council objected to plans for the bar to open and sell alcohol until 02:00 every night of the week.

They said the new bar would have a "negative impact" on the area, which is in a zone in the city centre which already has high levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The council has been approached for a comment.
