    Police are asking for the public's help in identifying an abusive train passenger in North Yorkshire.

    The man is reported to have shouted and sworn at a train guard on a service between Cononley and Skipton at 21:15 on 31 August.

    He is also alleged to have racially abused another passenger when they photographed him.

    British Transport Police believe the man in the image could help their investigation and ask anyone who knows him to text 61016 or call 0800 405 040.

    Leeds United's plans to turn a former school site into their new training ground have taken another step forwards.

    Leeds City Council has agreed to sell the site of the old Matthew Murray School in Holbeck to the Championship side.

    It is roughly a mile from the club's Elland Road stadium.

    Leeds United's current training base is at Thorp Arch near Wetherby.

    An objection from Natural England to a £5.5m sea defence scheme in East Yorkshire has been withdrawn.

    The Withernsea scheme was on hold as Natural England felt the proposed rock armour sea defences would cause environmental damage in the Humber estuary.

    After discussions involving government officials and intense lobbying Natural England has dropped its objection.

    The sea defences would protected homes, a holiday park and local roads from coastal erosion.

    A group of thieves are believed to have dressed up as workmen to steal stone from an historic bridge in West Yorkshire.

    Yorkshire stone worth more than £500 was stolen from Chantry Bridge in Wakefield.

    West Yorkshire Police believe the theft took place between 11:00 and 15:00 on Friday 13 September.

    Councillors have approved plans to build a University Technical College (UTC) in Doncaster town centre.

    The UTC, situated off College Road, in Waterdale, will house more than 700 students and is expected to open its doors in time for September 2020.

    The development includes a five-storey main building, a multi-use games area, landscaping and 20 parking spaces.

    Students attending the UTC will specialise in engineering and creative/digital technologies.

    The centre enables close working with major employers such as those on the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

    Plans to spend more than £80,000 to tackle the "challenges" stag and hen parties bring to York are being discussed today.

    Councillors are looking at the findings of a report which says York's evening economy has grown in recent years and is now "both vibrant and challenging".

    "The challenges are most sharply expressed when hen and stag parties use the city centre," it said.

    Council leader Keith Aspden said the rising number of bars and restaurants, as well as York's popularity as a party venue, causes problems between visitors and residents.

    "The authority must look at ways of reducing anti-social behaviour and support a safer city centre", he said.

    Some of the money will be used to appoint a council worker who'll bid for Purple Flag status, a scheme which recognises cities which are well managed at night.

  7. Caravan factory death: Worker 'hit by forklift truck'published at 15:08 British Summer Time 18 September 2019

    A worker died when he was hit by a forklift truck at a caravan factory, an inquest has heard.

    Paul Heath, 64, died at the Swift Caravans site in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, on 17 October 2017.

    Paramedic Richard Overton told Hull Coroner's Court Mr Heath was pinned under the vehicle's rear wheels when he arrived at about 10:00.

    He died at the scene of "multiple traumatic injuries" and suffered severe head injuries, the hearing heard.

    Mr Heath's widow Susan told the inquest jury her husband, of 40 years, was close to retiring when he died.

    He had worked as a caravan finisher at Swift for 19 years.

    The inquest is expected to last four days.

    An Army veteran from North Yorkshire will unveil a memorial to the Battle of Arnhem later, 75 years to the minute since he was parachuted in during World War Two.

    This week marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, which ended in failure for the Allies.

    About 10,600 Commonwealth servicemen took part, but only 2,400 returned.

    Mr Jefferies will unveil the Veterans of Het Verleden memorial plaque at exactly 15:08 this afternoon in Arnhem.

    The 97-year old has returned to the Netherlands for the anniversary of the battle several times, including taking on a commemorative parachute jump (pictured above) in 2017.

    An e-fit has been released of a woman officers want to speak to as part of an ongoing fraud investigation.

    It's after a Rotherham man handed over £5,000 to fraudsters following a phone scam.

    The woman (pictured above) allegedly attended the man's address in Todwick in August to collect the money.

    Anybody who recognises the woman is asked to get in touch with police.

    The mother of a woman who killed herself after gambling away £36,000 in a fortnight hopes a new NHS service will stop others facing the same pain.

    Kimberley Wadsworth even gambled away money raised to pay off her debts, leaving her mother Kay homeless.

    The Northern Gambling Service clinic in Leeds is the first outside London.

    Mrs Wadsworth said if help had been more readily available then her daughter would still be alive.

    "They know how to deal with these people that are gambling addicts, and they know the signs," she said.

    "It's the signs, and knowing what they've said and knowing that they're hiding it. And the lies that they tell, it's unbelievable."

    The University of Leeds has withdrawn its £3.6m investments in fossil fuel firms including Shell and BP.

    Vice-chancellor Sir Alan Langlands said climate change was "the most demanding global challenge we all face".

    The university said it now had "seven principles" to tackle the issue and wanted to have a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030.

    Leeds University Union said the principles were "a step in the right direction".

    The university said its seven principles include only investing in firms that work with the Paris Climate Accord.

    Police are asking for the public's help to find Kai Palmer who's gone missing from Doncaster but have urged people not to approach him.

    The 33-year-old was last seen on Tuesday 17 September at 10:30 near to Marshgate in Doncaster town centre.

    Kai is described as being 5ft 10ins, of a slim build with very short blond hair.

    He was last seen wearing very loose jeans that were worn low, a grey top, black boots and was holding a grey bag.

    Kai has connections to the Leeds area and officers believe he may have travelled there.

    If you see Kai, police say not to approach him but call 999.

    Two sporting events and students making their return to the city has prompted a travel warning from Sheffield City Council.

    Thousands of people are expected over the weekend ahead of the Sheffield 10K, a Sheffield Wednesday football match and students moving in ahead of their new term.

    The council is asking people to only drive if it's "essential".

    A number of city centre roads are closed on Sunday morning, including Ecclesall Road, Pinstone Street, Arundel Gate and Charter Row.

    It's anticipated that worst-affected roads will be the inner ring road from Park Square and Moore Street roundabout, St Mary's Road and Shoreham Street.

    Leeds Town Hall is set to undergo a £17m refurbishment over the next three years.

    The roof and clock tower have been undergoing renovations for the past year which saw the Victoria Hall closed while the roof of the auditorium was replaced.

    The town hall's roof tiles will replaced by Welsh slate and chandeliers updated to current environmental standards to take those renovation costs to a total of £5m.

    A further £10m worth of refurbishments will be focused on the interior.

    Leeds City Council is paying for the work from its capital fund.

    That does not include the organ and seating which will require an additional £2m that it intends to raise via a public campaign.

    Sirius Minerals is being hammered lower again, following its announcement on Tuesday that it was cancelling plans to raise $500m (£403m) through a bond sale.

    It blamed "market conditions", including Brexit and lack of government support for the decision and will now undergo a six-month review of four different options for a new financing plan to resume the project.

    After falling more than 50% on Tuesday they had fallen another 17% to below 4p although are now at 4.11p.

    There are fears that a humpback whale, which was spotted off the East Yorkshire coast earlier this week, may has died.

    Craig Thomas, from the Flamborough Bird Observatory, said he had seen the animal in the sea near Flamborough.

    While humpbacks are known to visit the area they're not often seen and are rarely caught on camera.

    It's now believed the whale has been washed up further along the east coast.

    Police officers in Rotherham are trying to find a man who's been missing since last week.

    Michael Joynson, 31, was last seen at about 18:40 on Thursday in Swinton.

    He has connections to Rotherham but he may have travelled to Nottingham.

    Michael is believed to have a missing front tooth and has a tattoo of a panther on the upper part of his right arm, as well as a tattoo of a cog on his neck.

    Anybody who has seen Michael or knows where he might be is asked to get in touch with South Yorkshire Police.

    Firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of flats in Leeds last night.

    Crews from Leeds, Hunslet and Cookridge stations were called to Poplar Court, in Bramley, just before 21:00 after the fire broke out in a sixth floor flat of the 11-storey building

    Resident Matthew Wootton said: "I was on the top floor and watching TV when I could smell burning. I didn't think anything of it until it got stronger smelling.

    "I went to my balcony and looked over and it was just black smoke. It was very scary."

    A spokeswoman for the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said a man was taken to hospital "for examination" following the fire.
