    The leader of Wakefield Council is to stand down next month after over two decades at the authority's helm, it's been confirmed.

    Last week, it was announced that Mr Box was to take over as chairman of troubled tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire after local authorities agreed to inject £1m to keep it going.

    Welcome to Yorkshire's former chief executive Sir Gary Verity resigned in March on health grounds, but later faced complaints about his behaviour and expenses.

    Mr Box says he's served "over half my life" on Wakefield Council and believes it's the "right decision" to step down as head of the authority on 30 November.

    He has pledged to "turn around" Welcome to Yorkshire and praised the work it had done boosting tourism in the county.

    "I'm keen to take up that challenge of restoring public faith in Welcome to Yorkshire," he says.

    There's been a big fall in unemployment in the Yorkshire and Humber region, according to the latest statistics.

    The number of people out of work in the region fell by 28,000 between June and August to 108,000, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

    Nationally, though, there's been an increase in unemployment, up by 22,000 to 1.31 million people currently out of work.

    A mobile phone and gold ring were stolen from the home of a 90-year-old man found dead with stab wounds in Pontefract earlier this month, police say.

    The body of Nathaniel Suggitt, known locally as Terry, was found in his home in Love Lane Terrace on 5 October.

    Officers believe a Vodafone Mobiewire Ayasha mobile phone and a gold signet ring with black onyx were stolen from the premises between 5 October and 6 October, police say.

    Anyone who may have been offered them for sale, seen them discarded, or have any information is being asked to contact police.

    Glyndwr Wayman, 49, of Love Lane Terrace, Pontefract, has been charged with Mr Suggitt's murder.

    A man's died following a collision in Sheffield city centre at the weekend.

    It happened at about 19:25 on Sunday when a BMW 5 series car travelling on Sheffield Parkway was involved in a collision near the exit for Parkway Drive, according to police.

    The driver of the BMW, a man thought to be in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    His family has been notified and is receiving support, police add.

    Anyone who saw what happened or who has dashcam footage of the crash, is being asked to contact the South Yorkshire force.

    A swan's been battered to death by two men in South Yorkshire believed to be wielding a plank of wood.

    The pair were seen repeatedly hitting the bird on a path near the River Don in Mexborough on Sunday.

    South Yorkshire Police have been checking CCTV to identify the men, who headed in the direction of the George and Dragon pub on Church Street after the attack.

    Councillor Sean Gibbons said a swan had also been attacked with a crossbow.

    "We're all absolutely appalled by this. The people who've done this are evil and must be brought to justice for battering a swan to death," he said.

    "They've been targeting swans and we believe this one was killed with a plank of wood. I honestly don't know what goes through people's heads to kill such a beautiful animal."

    Sheffield United co-owner Kevin McCabe says he intends to appeal against a High Court ruling that saw him lose control of the Premier League side.

    Last month, Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Mr McCabe were locked in a legal battle over their 50-50 ownership of the Blades.

    Mr Justice Fancourt ruled Mr McCabe must sell his stake to Prince Abdullah for £5m.

    However, lawyers representing Mr McCabe have said they want to challenge the ruling in the Court of Appeal.

    But, Mr McCabe will first have to show that he has an arguable case and get permission to appeal.

    He could get then permission from Mr Justice Fancourt or from a Court of Appeal judge.

    A Spitfire landed in Barnsley over the weekend ahead of the opening of a new museum exhibition about World War Two.

    The iconic fighter was placed outside the Town Hall at the weekend to mark the opening of The Second World War: Barnsley's Story which is on until March.

    The exhibition, at Experience Barnsley, tells the stories of people who lived and worked through the conflict.

    Leeds United could compete with current Premier League champions Manchester City if proposed investment from the Middle East goes through, according to the club's owner Andrea Radrizzani.

    Qatar Sports Investments, which owns Paris St-Germain, is one of three parties interested in the club.

    Radrizzani said a Leeds fan based in America and the owner of an unnamed side in Italy were the other two keen to invest in the Championship club.

    "The option of Qatar Sports Investments and Nasser (al-Khelaifi) - first of all they are friends, we have had a good relationship for a long time," Radrizzani told the Times, external.

    "They have the possibility to bring this club to compete with Manchester City, so for the fans that could be a fantastic opportunity."

    But the Leeds owner's not happy with the Times article's angle and has made his feelings known on social media:

    Police say they're concerned for the welfare of a missing 22-year-old man from Leeds.

    Jack Hirst, from Hunslet, was last seen in City Square in Leeds city centre at about 11:00 this morning, police say.

    He is described as about 5ft 8ins tall, of slim build with ginger hair, and was last seen wearing light grey Nike tracksuit bottoms and top, black trainers and a dark grey woolly hat.

    Officers say they are "concerned for his welfare".

    Anyone who has seen Mr Hirst is being asked to get in touch with police.

    Dewsbury-born forward Sam Burgess (pictured), who plays for Australian NRL club South Sydney, misses the tour because of a shoulder injury.

    The Lions, touring for the first time since 2007, will play Tonga in New Zealand on 26 October, before two matches against New Zealand and a final fixture against Papua New Guinea on 16 November.

    Three Australia-born players have been named in the squad, including Super League Man of Steel Jackson Hastings, who recently proved he qualifies for Great Britain through a Plymouth-born grandparent.

    A woman's been injured after the car she was travelling in hit a tree near Rotherham.

    Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on Cumwell Lane, Hellaby, at about 14:15.

    It's thought the car left the road and hit a tree close to nearby fishing ponds.

    The woman's injures are not yet known, police added.

    The road is expected to be closed for some time.
