Wakefield Council boss to stand down after 21 yearspublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 15 October 2019
The leader of Wakefield Council is to stand down next month after over two decades at the authority's helm, it's been confirmed.
Last week, it was announced that Mr Box was to take over as chairman of troubled tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire after local authorities agreed to inject £1m to keep it going.
Welcome to Yorkshire's former chief executive Sir Gary Verity resigned in March on health grounds, but later faced complaints about his behaviour and expenses.
Mr Box says he's served "over half my life" on Wakefield Council and believes it's the "right decision" to step down as head of the authority on 30 November.
He has pledged to "turn around" Welcome to Yorkshire and praised the work it had done boosting tourism in the county.
"I'm keen to take up that challenge of restoring public faith in Welcome to Yorkshire," he says.
