About 20 peafowl were roaming the streets of Finningley near Doncaster "damaging cars and gardens", according to some villagers.

Meanwhile, other residents said the colourful birds were the reason they moved to the village.

The parish council, which has been looking at ways to reduce the number of peacocks and peahens in the village, was presented with a 310-name petition set up in support of the birds.

At a meeting last night, the parish council agreed to take no further action.

It follows speculation that the HS2 project between Leeds and London could be scrapped.

The current route sees phase 2b, from Birmingham to Leeds, cut through South Yorkshire near Sheffield before heading into West Yorkshire with a branch reaching into North Yorkshire.

The independent review is calling for a new body called HS2 North to take charge.

Chris Oglesby, a member of the panel which oversaw the review, said: "Our review panel proposes that the North and Midlands must take control of the nation's high-speed network.

"HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail - a major priority of Boris Johnson and his government - are completely interlinked and a joined up approach is required to both and the upgrades to existing lines," he said.

A review into whether to scrap HS2 was launched by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in August and is due to be completed shortly.

  13. Welcome to Yorkshire had 'spend now, worry later' culturepublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

The new chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire says the tourism agency previously operated under a culture of "spend now, worry about it later".

    Peter Box

Peter Box released two reports this afternoon - one looking into the organisation's finances, and another at its future.

One, dated 29 August, said without a £500,000 loan from North Yorkshire County Council and another £1m investment "Welcome to Yorkshire will run out of cash by November at the latest".

The second revealed, among other matters, it spent £250,000 on its display at this year's Chelsea Flower Show - more than three times the £80,000 it had budgeted.

Former chief executive Sir Gary Verity resigned in March on health grounds, but later faced complaints about his behaviour and expenses.

    Quote Message

It’s clear to me, from reading both reports that governance and strategic oversight of the operations have been largely absent. Financial planning was not robust enough which led to a culture of spend now, worry about it later."
