    Rules that mean some victims of childhood sex abuse are denied compensation must be changed, say MPs.

    Under the existing terms those with an unspent criminal conviction or victims deemed to have "consented" to abuse despite being a child, are among those denied payouts.

    Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham, said it was a "scandal" the scheme had not yet been reformed.

    "The whole scheme needs comprehensive reform so that victims and survivors are put at the centre of the process because, right now, it is all about saving the government money not supporting people to rebuild their lives shattered by crime."

    Sammy Woodhouse, who was sexually abused when she was just 14, said when her claim was rejected she "felt like somebody had just kicked me straight in the teeth."

    She said she was only glad she had received the letter when she was at a more "stable" time of her life.

    "If I would have got that letter when I was suicidal, I would have probably taken my own life," she said.

    Started by local shop Yarn Etc, a challenge was set to create thousands of woolly poppies to cover Harrogate's Cenotaph next week.

    Fiona Burks, who owns the shop, said she was pleased by the reaction following a similar idea in Ripon last year.

    "It's just a lovely, community thing to do," she said.

    "After Ripon did such an amazing job - and it looked spectacular - I think everyone wants to get on board."

    After previously buying a lingerie factory and gym, West Lindsey District Council have now added more property to their portfolio.

    The authority have now purchased land on Wheatley Road in Doncaster which is currently being used by the car dealership Evans Halshaw at a cost of £5.35m.

    It takes their total amount spent on commercial property to more than £20m and the council have another £10m set aside for further purchases.

    The return on the council’s investments so far has brought in £1.7m of ongoing potential income – the original target was £1m.

    Scarborough Borough Council is set to appoint a group to help it meet its commitments to preventing a ”climate emergency”.

    The borough authority declared the emergency in January and committed itself to hit a number of goals and targets, including making the area carbon neutral by 2030.

    In a report to go before the authority’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee next Wednesday, it said the board will be asked to create a climate change task group.

    The report concludes that the outcomes of the group’s work should lead to “a draft set of climate change strategic objectives which are realistic, achievable and have widespread community and stakeholder support”.

    A man was sniffed out by a police dog as he hid under suitcases in a shop in Hull this morning.

    Police were called to an ongoing burglary at a shop at St Andrew’s Retail Park at about 03:00.

    Police dog Havoc and his handler found a man underneath a display full of suitcases.

    Clothes and shoes, that were believed to be stolen, were seized and the man was arrested.

    Infamous serial killer Dennis Nilsen spent his final day in an East Yorkshire prison lying in his cell suffering from internal bleeding, an inquest has heard.

    The 72-year-old, known as the Muswell Hill Murderer, died at HMP Full Sutton last May, 34 years into his life sentence for carrying out a murderous spree in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

    Nilsen is believed to have killed as many as 15 men, most of them homeless homosexuals, at his north London home.

    The inquest at Hull Coroner's Court heard how Nilsen spent his final hours in prison in "excruciating pain" and lying in his own filth as he suffered a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

    The notorious murderer was taken to hospital in York where he had emergency surgery but, despite the procedure being successful, he died on 12 May.

    Recording his verdict Hull coroner Professor Paul Marks said: "Dennis Andrew Nilsen died of natural causes."

    A Yorkshire charity is helping patients with terminal illnesses write a song they can leave behind for their loved ones.

    The Swan Song Project was started by Ben Slack at Marie Curie Hospice Bradford in May 2017.

    Vic Simborowski, who recently wrote a song with their help, said it was an "uplifting experience".

    He said: "My life is finite so, at the end of the day, my children will have something to remember me by."

    It's part of a renewed appeal to find the teenager who was reported missing on 14 October.

    More than 40 people unaware they were in the early stages of lung cancer have received life-saving treatment after being diagnosed in a new trial.

    Organisers of the Leeds Lung Health Check said it was the largest lung cancer screening trial in the UK.

    The four-year project, which is costing £5.2m, is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research.

    It says it has screened 3,000 people in Leeds for the early signs of lung cancer since it launched in 2018.

    Sheila Benson (pictured) stopped smoking 20 years ago.

    She was one of those diagnosed with cancer and her screening revealed she needed urgent surgery to remove her right kidney and part of her lung.

    She says: “I’m so pleased I went for a lung health check, I would never have known otherwise.”

    Workers at a some of England's most popular museums have gone on strike in a dispute over pay.

    Staff from top science museums around the country have taken industrial action calling for "a reasonable wage".

    The dispute involves tourist attractions, including London's Science Museum and York's National Railway Museum.

    The Science Museum Group said all of its museums were open as usual with most activities available to visitors.

    The pay dispute also involves the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Blythe House in London and the National Collections Centre in Wroughton, Wiltshire.
