Solomon Robinson, 26, from Scarborough, died after being found badly injured near the town hall in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The five men, all from Scarborough and aged between 18 and 22, appeared before magistrates in York.
They were remanded in custody and are due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 25 October.
Those in court were:
A 16-year-old boy, two men aged 20 and two others aged 21 and 28, also arrested in connection with the death, have been released on conditional bail.

Officers were called to Marshgate Prison at about 00:15 this morning to reports of criminal damage being caused by a vehicle.

Police tried to stop the black Vauxhall Corsa on the Dearne Valley Parkway before it drove off.
The driver was eventually stopped at the Co-operative Funeral Care on Fornham Street in Sheffield.

The move comes as part of a move to tackle firework-related anti-social behaviour, which police say has "plagued" the Kelsalls area of the city's Burley area.
West Yorkshire Police say: "Over the bonfire night period in recent years residents have had their lives made a misery by large groups letting off fireworks, aiming them at people, homes, cars and the emergency services."
The force says: "Groups of up to 50 youths were involved in anti-social behaviour, including barricading roads, with many of those involved wearing masks, making them hard to identify."
The application to Leeds County Court for an injunction would create an exclusion zone covering the area in which anyone would be forbidden from:
Insp Andy Loftus, said: “For weeks and months, these streets become the setting for a completely unacceptable level of behaviour which has a negative impact of the quality of life of people living there.
“This injunction, if granted, will give us much-needed additional powers to intervene at an early stage and prevent incidents before they occur."
Disruption and cancellations of train services between South Yorkshire and London is expected to continue for the rest of the day following a broken rail.
Services have been reduced between Sheffield and London as Network Rail work to fix the issue near Hendon.
A temporary repair should be completed by 15:00, according to Network Rail, but trains will still run at a slower speed than normal.
Further work will be carried out overnight and a full service tomorrow is expected to resume tomorrow.
A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of drug and money laundering offences after cannabis, amphetamines and cash were found during a raid on a property in Hull.
The drugs were found along with weighing scales and about £1,500 in cash at a property on 31st Avenue, say police.
Humberside Police say the pair were arrested after a tip-off from a member of the community.
Both have been released under investigation.
Insp Paul Bennett said: “Yet again my officers have stopped a supply of drugs from making it into our communities thanks to information that has been passed on to us."
Police are carrying out extra patrols in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield after a lorry was driven into a house and the cab was set on fire.
The incident happened at about 19:30 on Monday evening when the vehicle was reversed into a property and then torched.
A woman inside the house escaped unhurt.
Police believe it was a targeted attack and say they're looking into whether it's connected to wider issues within the community.
Trains between South Yorkshire and London have been cancelled or delayed following a broken rail closing one of the lines.
Services from Sheffield to the capital have been reduced from two trains to one an hour in both directions.
The broken rail is near Hendon, which is affecting services on the route.
Passengers are being asked to travel to Doncaster to get to London with a ticket acceptance in place between train operators.

The explosion, just before 03:00 this morning at Tesco, on Aberford Road, in Garforth, caused extensive damage.
West Yorkshire Police said the raid was carried out by four masked men, three of whom were seen pumping gas into the ATM from gas canisters in order to cause the explosion.
The men left the scene in a grey Volvo headed towards Bar Lane.
The force say they do not know at this stage whether any cash was stolen.
Det Insp Richard Holmes, said: “They used a fairly unusual method to target the machine and we're looking into whether it could be linked to other recent incidents in the region."
Officers say they want to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or who has seen the Volvo, which has the partial registration NK, in the area.
Leeds and England women’s rugby league star Lois Forsell has announced her retirement due to injury.
The two-time Challenge Cup winner (pictured above right), who played 18 times for England, suffered an injury playing for Leeds Rhinos Women against St Helens in the 2018 season.
The club says following further complications to the injury she has been forced to retire.
The 28-year-old said: “This was the worst decision for me to make and I am heartbroken that I will not be able to play again."
Forsell played for Bradford Bulls in the inaugural Super League season, where she won the Challenge Cup, League Leaders Shield and Grand Final.
In 2018 she helped launch the first ever Leeds Rhinos Women’s team and led the Rhinos to Challenge Cup success and the League Leaders title.
The Rugby Football League described her as "a certified Women's Rugby League legend".

A family were tied up and threatened at gunpoint after three masked men forced their way into a house Doncaster.
Money, jewellery and other personal items were stolen after the men burst into the home in North Lane, Sykehouse, as the family slept.
South Yorkshire Police said the occupants were restrained with cable ties and threatened with a suspected shotgun during the raid.
The victims, a 49-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl, were uninjured.
Det Con Billy McLean said: “This must have been an incredibly scary experience for this family, especially the younger members."

Five men are due to appear in court this morning charged with murdering a man found with stab wounds in Scarborough.
