Hotline for prisoners' families 'not answered' - reportpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2019
Doncaster Prison is one of several across the country criticised for not properly operating an emergency phone line for the relatives of prisoners who need to raise welfare concerns.
A report out today says that where emergency phone lines have been introduced, most are not being answered by staff.
The Ministry of Justice said the findings were "unacceptable" and pledged to address the problem.
The availability of a dedicated 'safer custody' telephone line for families to flag concerns about a prisoner's physical or mental health was a key recommendation in a review by Lord Michael Farmer which had been commissioned by the government.
The review was published in 2017 amid mounting concern about the rising tide of self-harm and suicides in prisons.
