  2. British Red Cross donates £50k for flood-hit communitiespublished at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2019

    The British Red Cross has announced it's given £50,000 to help people worst affected by flooding in Yorkshire and the Midlands.

    The money, which is from their "disaster fund", will be given to the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF).

    Families who are struggling to buy food as they live in temporary accommodation are one of the groups the British Red Cross is trying to help, it said.

    Ruth Willis, from SYCF, said: "Right now, people across South Yorkshire have been left devastated.

    "This contribution to the South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Appeal will help so many people to regain a little normality back into their lives.”

    A new father whose new home in Doncaster was flooded still hasn't seen how much damage it's caused.

    Dan Greenslade and his partner Jade Croft had baby Indie on Friday.

    Hours later they were told by family members their home was was "underwater".

    "When we were at hospital we were in touch with my sister back in the village as we knew Fishlake gets pretty bad when it rains", he said.

    "I got a phone call at about midnight saying we were underwater.

    "We only moved in three weeks ago. We'd spent quite a bit of money getting it all ready and we've not even been able to spend a night there."

    The family are staying with Jade's parents in nearby Hatfield at the moment, he said.

    "I went back to Fishlake on Monday for the first time, but I wasn't actually able to get to my house to assess the damage as it's still underwater."

    A number of community hubs have been set up to help residents who have been forced from their homes following the floods in Doncaster.

    The nine council-run hubs offer help and advice when it comes to planning to return home.

    Centres have been set up in Stainforth, Thorne, Askern, Bentley, Consibrough, Denaby Main and Swinton, external.

    A council spokesperson said since the flooding began its teams have knocked on more than 700 doors to check on residents and helped with filling and handing out more than 31,000 sandbags.

    Almost 40 pumps are working flat out to remove more than one milllion cubic meters of water a day in a Doncaster village.

    Fishlake saw floodwater as high as 2m in places, but this has since dropped to 0.3m, the Environment Agency said.

  7. Troops help out to protect substations from floodingpublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2019

    Work's continuing this morning to protect two substations responsible for providing power to about 15,000 homes from further possible flooding in Doncaster.

    Northern Powergrid said yesterday that temporary flood barriers were being put up around its substations in Kirk Sandall and Bentley with the aid of the military.

    These are the latest pictures from Fishlake, near Doncaster, almost a week on from when heavy rain first started falling, leading to major flooding in the area.

    Hundreds of people remain unable to go back home after they were forced to leave due to flooding.

    In some parts of South Yorkshire, the clean-up operation after the recent flooding is well under way.

    The whole of the Willow Bridge caravan site in Doncaster was covered in waist-high water from the River Don last Friday night, which caused all the properties to be flooded.

    But today the clean up operation is ongoing.

    Site owner Tina Gavin says: "It's devastating. Thank goodness it's such a close community. Everybody's pulling together and we've had so much support from people from surrounding areas."

    Some site residents told the BBC it'll take weeks or even months to get back on their feet.

    The Environment Agency has issued 19 flood warnings and eight flood alerts, external for South Yorkshire.

    And a Met Office yellow "be aware" warning for rain is in place, meaning fast-flowing or deep floodwater is possible "causing a danger to life".

  10. Doncaster flooding: More troops on standbypublished at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2019

    About 200 troops remain on standby to help those already on the ground working to shore up flood defences in Doncaster.

    The Ministry of Defence said 200 troops from the Light Dragoons and 2 Royal Anglian are already in South Yorkshire helping the fire service and other authorities along the River Don.

    If needed, they can also be drafted in to help warning and informing residents and to support potential evacuation efforts from high risk or flooded areas.

    Another 200 personnel remain on standby should more troops be needed to help, the MoD said.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for rain expected to hit already flooded areas of South Yorkshire:

    Weather warnings are in place, external around Sheffield and Doncaster as well as elsewhere across the country.

    The Met Office said a yellow warning for rain around South Yorkshire meant fast-flowing or deep floodwater was possible "causing a danger to life".

    It said further homes or businesses could be flooded and some communities "may be cut off by flooded roads".

    The Environment Agency has issued 19 flood warnings and eight flood alerts , externalfor the county.

    Residents in flood-stricken Fishlake near Doncaster are braced for more rain, with forecasters warning there could be a danger to life.

    The village has been cut off by recent flooding, with hundreds of people being forced to leave their properties.

    About 200 Army personnel are in South Yorkshire supporting the flood effort.

    A yellow 'be aware' weather warning for rain is in place, external for areas around Sheffield and Doncaster from 09:00.

    The Met Office said the warning meant fast flowing or deep flood water was possible, "causing a danger to life".

    The heaviest of the rain is expected to hit between 09:00 and 10:00 and continue throughout the day, with the warning in place until 03:00 on Friday.

    "Even some amount of rain could cause rivers to rise," Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said.

    About 500 homes have been flooded in Doncaster, with 1,200 properties evacuated in areas hit by the floods.

    Heavy and persistent rain is forecast on Thursday which could affect the power network, it said.

    The electric provider says temporary flood barriers are being put up around its substations in Kirk Sandall and Bentley with the aid of the military.

    It also said that following flooding in Fishlake, Doncaster, about 260 properties are without power.

    A couple have been told it could take six to 12 months to make their Fishlake home livable again, after it was flooded.

    Sandra and Dave Liddle have lived on Grove Road for 37 years and saw their bungalow ruined by floodwater.

    Now, they've been told by their insurance company it could take as long as a year before they could live in their home again.

    "We're just devastated", Sandra told the BBC.

    "But we're trying to make the best of everything. We've got of support from everyone around us. They've been absolute marvellous."

    The fire service says it has helped rescue more than 300 people from flooded properties in South Yorkshire.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service says it's had 2,550 emergency calls since last week Thursday.

    Help from a number of other fire and rescue services from across the country meant 75,000,000 litres of water has been pumped out of affected areas.

    More than £11,000 has been raised for a book-regifting group which has seen much of its stock destroyed in flooding in South Yorkshire.

    The organisation, Reread, saw its office and warehouse on the banks of the River Don badly damaged by floodwater over the weekend.

    The social enterprise aims to "breathe new life into old books" by keeping them out of landfill to either sell online or gift to children.

    Now, a crowdfunding campaign set up earlier this week has raised more than £11,500.
