    Heavy rain forecast for Thursday is likely to cause problems for already flooded areas of South Yorkshire, according to the Environment Agency (EA).

    Five severe flood warnings, deemed a threat to life, remain on South Yorkshire's River Don, external, with flooding in the area likely to continue until Wednesday.

    There are also 21 flood warnings for South Yorkshire, external, meaning flooding is expected and 12 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible

    The EA's Andrew Denville believes further downpours later in the week will only make things worse.

    He says: "It looks like there'll be enough volume of rain to exacerbate the already saturated catchments.

    "And the track of the storm looks like it could cause further flood impacts in these already saturated communities."

    The fire service says it's received about 3,000 calls and rescued more than 200 people in the last few days.

    More than 40 road closures are in place and train and tram services are affected.

  3. Flood charity appeal nears £50k markpublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A crowdfunding appeal to raise £50,000 to help those affected by flooding in South Yorkshire is nearing its target.

    The South Yorkshire Community Foundation set the target following heavy rain which lead to the flooding of homes.

    The money raised will go towards helping families who have been displaced from their homes and had their properties damaged by the flood waters.

    The fire service says it's received about 3,000 calls and rescued more than 200 people since persistent rain on Thursday caused flooding in South Yorkshire.

    Deputy Chief Fire Officer Alex Jones says: "Appliances and specialists from around the country are supporting us.

    "It started off in Sheffield, moved to Rotherham and now Doncaster has the brunt of it."

    Hundreds of people in the village of Fishlake were evacuated from their homes over the weekend and Doncaster Council is now urging anyone who stayed behind to get in touch so the fire service can get them out.

    This is the scene in Bentley this morning after homes were inundated with floodwater as the River Don overtopped.

    People have had to strip their homes after the water damaged carpets and electrical appliances.

    Homes on Yarborough Terrace were badly damaged, but the floodwater has since been pumped away by the emergency services.

    The tram train service in Sheffield and Rotherham remains suspended this morning due to flooding.

    Part of the line was damaged between Meadowhall and Rotherham Parkgate at the end of last week, with floodwater covering the track.

    The yellow route also won't be serving Meadowhall, according to operator Stagecoach.

    People forced out of their homes by flooding in South Yorkshire are being warned it could be at least 48 hours until they can return home.

    The Environment Agency says it doesn't expect flood waters in the area to go down for at least the next 24 hours.

    Doncaster Council says it believes people will be out of their homes for at least the next 48 hours.

    The council says residents who are unable to stay with family or friends can still access the rest centre in Stainforth, which will be operational for as long as is needed, the authority adds.

    People in the Bentley Rise area have also been advised to evacuate their homes.

    A military helicopter has been working through the night to bolster defences in the area.

  9. Rotherham school to crowdfund for flooding repairspublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A school severely damaged by flooding in Kilnhurst, Rotherham is to remain closed as parents have begun crowdfunding to pay for repairs.

    The full extent of the damage hasn't yet been assessed, but pictures from the BBC helicopter show the primary school completely surrounded by floodwater.

    A crowdfunding page has been set up by the Friends of Kilnhurst Primary to raise money for repairs and replacement items at the school.

    At least £5,000 has been raised over the weekend, beating their target of £3,000.

    Rumours of people looting flooded properties in Doncaster are "unhelpful", according to police, with officers guarding properties which have been affected by floodwater.

    An RAF Chinook helicopter crew has been working through the night to protect residents from floodwater in Doncaster.

    The aircraft has been moving 40 tonnes of aggregate to build up flood defences along the River Don.

    Doncaster Council is warning drivers not to attempt to drive through flood water and temporary road closures.

    The severe warnings are in place at Bentley, Fishlake, Kirk Bramwith, South Bramwith and Willow Bridge Caravan Site.

    The Environment Agency (EA) said it expects flooding in the area until midweek.

    There are also 21 flood warnings for South Yorkshire, external, meaning flooding is expected and 12 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible

    Road closures are in place and train and tram services are affected.
