About 250 jobs in Stocksbridge, 17 in Rotherham, and 15 in Brinsworth are set to be cut as well as 70 in Newport.

Liberty Steel has blamed "challenging" market conditions and a lingering reduction in demand for UK steel products.

Ross Murdoch, national officer of the GMB union, said: "Once again we have more bad news for the UK steel industry. A country that doesn't produce its own steel for key infrastructure projects and shipbuilding is a county that's destined to fail.

"Our steelworkers deserve better than this. The government urgently needs to intervene and ensure steel companies in the UK receive the backing they have long called for on energy costs and business rates.

"GMB will of course engage with the company to mitigate any losses for our members and will continue to campaign with our sister steel trade unions to bring about the support and investment required."

Two meetings were held in Leeds yesterday to address rail issues - the Rail North Committee followed by the board meeting.

Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, told the board meeting upgrades to Manchester stations were "crucial" as the rail "pinch points" in the city caused challenges to the whole of the north of England including Liverpool to Leeds and Darlington.

Rail Minister Rail Chris Heaton-Harris told the meeting to expect to see a "significant change very soon" in response to criticism of Northern rail.

Northern has faced problems in recent years, including disruption caused by cancellations after the introduction of new timetables in May 2018.

Rail chiefs from Northern and Transpennine Express apologised at the Rail North Committee meeting for recent poor performances.

Scarborough Borough Council says it's commissioned the Association of Electoral Administrators (AEA) to undertake "an independent and impartial investigation of the role of the council in carrying out the ballot for the Yorkshire Coast BID in 2018."

Some businesses in Whitby, Filey and Scarborough said they didn't received ballot papers, others were unhappy about how much money they were having to pay in a charge imposed by the BID.

The money raised is used to promote the area and put on markets and festivals.

The council says Peter Stanyon, Chief Executive of the AEA, is undertaking the investigation and has been given background information by the council, the Yorkshire Coast BID Company and representatives of BID levy payers.
