    The location of solar-powered bins dotted around Bradford will be assessed after doubts about their efficiency were raised in a meeting.

    The design compacts the rubbish before being emptied, holding up to nine times more litter than the standard bin.

    Four were set up in Horton Park, Lister Park and Chellow Dene Reservoir over summer.

    Performance officer at Bradford Council, Stuart Russo, said the bins were “very expensive” and it was unlikely more could be bought unless more funding becomes available.

    The bins will be re-deployed to other areas depending on their usage.

    A man has been arrested after a police chase through the middle of Sheffield last night.

    A car was involved in a crash, with the driver then failing to stop for police in the city.

    During the chase, the car was involved in another crash, damaging its tyres and colliding with a street sign and a kerb at Hunters Bar roundabout.

    The car was eventually stopped by officers on Ecclesall Road.

    A 24-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, South Yorkshire Police said.

    A farmer from Hull who received two life-saving transplants is welcoming a new organ donation law - which comes into force in spring this year.

    Tamara Hall, 45, suffered acute liver failure 13 years ago - now she's urging families to talk about donation.

    Under the new law - known as Max and Keira's law - all adults will be considered to have agreed to organ donation unless they opt out.

    "It's really important that people can opt out of donating - if people don't want to that's fine" Tamara said.

    "But the majority of people when they've asked people before would donate but they've just never got round to signing up."

    Sessions for children to read to dogs to improve their confidence have been set up in a Selby library.

    Selby library took on the idea after hearing about a scheme in America.

    Dora and Morgan (pictured) are two Labrador rescue dogs from Serbia and have been therapy trained.

    Children can read whatever they would like to the dogs.

    Librarian Alison Tutill said: "It has been shown to help children develop literacy skills and confidence, through the calming effect of the dog’s presence on children and because the dog will listen to the children read without being judgemental.

    "This comforting environment helps to nurture children’s enthusiasm for reading and provides them with the confidence needed to read aloud."

    The 'Read2Dog' sessions will begin on Saturday morning.

    Sheffield and Rotherham's tram-train service is currently running a reduced timetable - because of a lack of vehicles.

    Operators Stagecoach Supertram says it has two vehicles available with two services an hour being operated.

    In an earlier Tweet, Stagecoach said it was due "to the manufacturer being unable to provide sufficient vehicles to us".

    A spa severely damaged by flooding in South Yorkshire in November has reopened.

    Truffle Lodge, in the Doncaster village of Fishlake, is run by Pam Webb - who said shortly after being flooded she wasn't insured.

    Ms Webb has spent the last two months cleaning the spa, along with her team of staff, to get it open as soon as they could, as pictured below.

    Almost two months later, they've reopened and are looking forward to starting serving customers and building the business again.

    Pam added: "But also this is only just the beginning in a lot of ways because there's an awful lot of questions that still need to be answered with regards to the how and the why did this happen."

    A North Yorkshire MP has told the BBC that some people are facing pressure from their employers because of problems with TransPennine Express rail services.

    The company, which runs services to Sheffield, Leeds, York, Hull and Scarborough, is under scrutiny following cancellations and delays.

    They've been asked to attend a meeting with Transport for the North in Leeds this Wednesday to discuss what's happened.

    Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, said: "We're absolutely at our wits' end. There are people who've been told by their employers to either move house or move job.

    "It's not acceptable at all."

    Leo Goodwin, Managing Director for TransPennine Express said bringing in new trains had an impact on schedules, with an amended timetable running throughout January.

    He said: “I am truly sorry for recent disruption that our customers have been experiencing.

    "I understand the frustration that our customers have as our current performance is not acceptable and we are working hard to fix this.”

    A man was hit with a crowbar after he "disturbed burglars" in his home this morning in Hull.

    The victim, who is in his 70s, was met by three people in his home on Marfleet Lane at about 06:00.

    He was then hit with a crowbar, Humberside Police said, external, leaving him with serious injuries.

    Three men, aged 17, 24 and 31, have been arrested in connection with the incident, the force added.

    A fox has been rescued after it became trapped in a football net at a school in Sheffield.

    The netting became tangled around the animal's neck, eventually trapping it near a fence in the field.

    The RSPCA were called to help the distressed fox and the netting was eventually cut away.

    Plans to build 2,000 new homes in east Leeds will be discussed by the council this afternoon.

    After years of talks, it's hoped progress will be made soon on the development near Whinmoor and Seacroft - where 15% of homes will be classed as affordable.

    The plans date back almost eight years when a group of developers and landowners said they wanted to build the homes.

    Since then, there've been a lot of discussions about making sure there are enough facilities for local people - like a school and open spaces.

    A cash machine has been severely damaged following an explosion at a bank in East Yorkshire.

    Police were called to the Barclays Bank on Ferriby Road, Hessle at about 01:30 this morning.

    Pictures from the scene show a police cordon in place, with parts of the cash machine lying on the floor.

    Humberside Police says it was called following reports of a loud noise and a "small dark coloured car driving suspiciously in the area".

    An investigation has been launched, the force said.

    It's not known if anything has been stolen.

    Up to a month's worth of roadworks begins at one of York's busiest junctions later with drivers being advised to allow extra time on their journeys.

    The works are at the junction of The Mount and Scarcroft Road, and are to refurbish and replace traffic lights.

    City of York Council says the job should take no more than four weeks to complete - some on-street parking in The Mount will be suspended while the work is done.

    A 28-year-old man remains in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in Sheffield at the weekend.

    Emergency services were called to the Staniforth Road area of the city just before 17:00 on Saturday.

    South Yorkshire Police said the man had been injured in his upper body.

    Staniforth Road was closed while officers carried out a forensic examination and conducted house-to-house inquiries. It has since reopened.

    The force said no arrests had been made, and appealed for witnesses to get in touch.

    There are calls for the government to change the rules around Universal Credit after figures from Hull City Council show nearly 80% of its council tenants are in rent arrears.

    Hull and East Yorkshire Citizens Advice Service says change is needed for those struggling financially.

    Posters from the council appeared over Christmas telling tenants to get in touch if they can't afford rent.

    The Department for Work and Pensions said Universal Credit was a "force for good", with 2.7m people "being supported by the benefit".

    "It gives people financial help if they’re unemployed, low-paid or unable to work," a DWP spokesperson said.

    “People can get paid urgently if they need it and 95% of payments are made in full and on time."

    Emergency services were called at 17:25 GMT on Saturday to Greens Way opposite Mexborough train station, near Doncaster.

    A black BMW had hit a 68-year-old man, from Mexborough, who was crossing the road.

    The 22-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.
