If the proposals get the go-ahead, a three-storey, 34,000 sq m terminal would replace the current building.

The chief executive of the airport, Hywel Rees, said the new terminal would "address challenges passengers face far too frequently and that cannot be overcome within our current building".

If approved, the plans would mean the airport could meet its target of net zero carbon emissions by 2023, according to LBA.

Beckie Hart, CBI regional director, says the plans are a "significant investment in our region's infrastructure".

"It will support Yorkshire’s businesses through improved connectivity to new markets across the world, underpinning our aspirations for strong and inclusive growth.

“This announcement is yet another welcome step towards the UK becoming a global leader in sustainable transport.”

In a statement the leaders of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield councils together with Sheffield City Region Mayor, Dan Jarvis, announced the deal had been agreed and would be put to public consultation later this year.
