  17. A19 death: Lorry driver on trialpublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

    Mark Denten
    BBC Look North

A lorry driver caused the death of another motorist after stopping his lorry on the A19 near Sunderland, a court has heard.

Marcel Balan, 57, from Cope Street in Barnsley, is charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing death by driving without due care and attention.

John Robinson, who was 24 and from Peterlee, died after his Ford Fusion collided with the rear of Mr Balan’s lorry on March 12.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Balan, who is from Romania, had stopped his DAF lorry in an unlit section of the southbound A19 just before midnight.

Prosecutor Mark Giuliani said Marcel Balan, who was on a series of deliveries for a national coffee chain, stopped his vehicle with “moderate to heavy braking” because he had missed his intended exit for the A1231 in Sunderland.

He told the jury the braking took “only eight seconds.”

The prosecution also argues Mr Balan had put his lorry into reverse and was intending to reverse up the slip road to his intended exit.

The court heard three seconds after he stopped his truck, John Robinson’s car collided with the rear of the stationary lorry.

Mr Robinson suffered "severe head injuries" and died at the scene.

Mr Giuliani told the court that for the driver “to stop alone, let alone make a stop so quickly was not only unnecessary but clearly dangerous”.

Marcel Balan denies all three charges. The case continues.

  20. Humber Bridge cameras tackle speedingpublished at 13:26 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

Mobile speed cameras which were introduced on the Humber Bridge at the end of last year have made a noticeable difference, according to traffic officers.

The Humber BridgeImage source, PA Media

The introduction of mobile cameras on the Humber Bridge was sanctioned back in November after a survey found there were about 25,000 journeys each day and the "majority" of traffic broke the limit.

In September, one motorist was clocked travelling over the bridge at 132mph.

The road, which runs from Hessle to Barton upon Humber, has a speed limit of 50mph.

Ruth Gore, from Safer Roads Humber, says introducing the cameras has made a difference.

"Staff who work on the bridge and people who travel on the bridge on a daily basis have noticed that a lot more traffic is abiding by that 50mph speed limit," she says.
