    Drivers of the most polluting vehicles could be charged up to £50 a day to drive through Bradford as the council aims to improve the city’s air quality.

    Charges for buses, coaches, taxis and lorries are being considered as part of plans to introduce a Clean Air Zone in the city in October 2021, but private vehicles will not be included.

    Areas included in the proposed zone include the area within the Outer Ring Road, Manningham Lane/Canal Road and Shipley/Saltaire.

    The move comes after Bradford Council was given a “Ministerial Direction” in 2018 to drastically reduce the district’s air pollution as soon as possible.

    However, the plans are dependent on a successful £60m bid to the government, which will be used to provide grants to the owners of polluting vehicles to upgrade to greener fuel sources.

    If approved by the council's executive next Tuesday, the plans will be put out to public consultation from 18 February, external.

    This morning's snowy weather in Derbyshire has shut the A6024 at Holme Moss and is continuing to cause "difficult conditions" for motorists.

    Derbyshire County Council said conditions have been tricky on the Snake Pass, Woodhead Pass, and in Holme Moss (pictured below earlier) and Glossop.

    The authority said it has gritters out but traffic issues in Glossop have been causing problems.

    Drivers have been urged to avoid the area if possible.

  5. Five arrested in major 'county lines' raid in Bradfordpublished at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2020

    Five men from Bradford have been arrested following a major cross-border operation targeting 'county lines' drug dealing.

    Seventy police officers from North Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Police targeted six addresses in Bradford yesterday.

    Police say the raids were in connection with drug dealing between Bradford and Harrogate.

    The arrested men who are currently being held in custody are aged 20, 37, 29, 26, and 22.

    Officers say during searches of the properties they recovered suspected class A drugs, including heroin and cocaine, £3,000 in cash, a machete, 20 mobile phones and drugs paraphernalia, including scales and deal bags.

    'County lines' involves criminal networks expanding drug dealing activities from big cities to smaller towns.

    Refugees at Za'atari camp in Jordan and a team of scientists from Sheffield are working together to create a way to grow fresh food in old mattress foam.

    The foam works as a substrate in place of soil in a system called hydroponics, solving two problems in one: recycling the old mattresses piling up in the camp and creating a way to grow fresh food in a place where the soil is too poor and salty for any agriculture.

    Former England hooker Lois Forsell has been named as the new head coach of Leeds Rhinos Women.

    The 28-year-old, who retired in October because of a knee injury, will replace Adam Cuthbertson.

    He led the Rhinos to successive Challenge Cup wins and victory in the 2019 Grand Final when they beat Yorkshire rivals Castleford 20-12.

    Leeds start the new Women's Super League season with a home game against Bradford Bulls on 29 March.

    "I would like to thank (director of rugby) Kevin Sinfield and the club for giving me this opportunity and I am very excited about what this group of players can achieve," said Forsell.

    The Humber Bridge has been reopened to all traffic after high winds meant high sided and "wind vulnerable vehicles" were banned from using the crossing.

    The bridge was closed to all traffic on Sunday for only the second time in its history and has been remained closed to certain types of vehicles ever since.

    Police say the bridge may close again depending on the strength of the wind as the day progresses.

    There are still 20 flood warnings in place across Yorkshire, external this morning as the region continues to feel the effects of Storm Ciara.

    They include coastal regions such as the Humber estuary, external and Scarborough, external as well as the rivers Ouse, Hull, Swale and Aire.

    The Environment Agency (EA) is warning people to be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and says it's monitoring the situation closely.

    The majority of the flood warnings are in North Yorkshire, with nine of those on the River Ouse, including Acaster Malbis, Linton Lock, Naburn and York.

    One of British artist David Hockney's most famous works, The Splash, has been sold for £23.1m at Sotheby's in London.

    The buyer is not known. It had been estimated to sell for £20m-£30m - and ended up going for £23,117,000.

    The painting, in Bradford-born Hockney's minimalist style, depicts the moment after a diver hits the water in an LA swimming pool.

    It is considered one of the stand-out pop art images of the 20th Century and is one of a trio of works alongside A Little Splash and A Bigger Splash.

    A Bigger Splash is housed in London's Tate Britain while A Little Splash remains in a private collection and has never appeared on the public market.
