    Officers investigating the death of a pedestrian in a crash on the M1 last year have appealed for the occupants of a vehicle who they believe may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

    Jake Glover-Brown, 25, from Barnsley, died after he was hit by a black Mercedes CLA in the outside lane of the northbound carriageway shortly before midnight on 18 October.

    Four men and one woman, aged between 16 and 50, were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in connection with the incident but have since been released pending further enquiries.

    Now South Yorkshire Police want to trace the occupants of a small, light-coloured hatch back vehicle, possibly a Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa or Astra, which broke down near to the scene of the collision shortly after it happened.

    Anyone with information about the collision or who was in the broken down car is asked to contact police.

    Reacting to the news that North Yorkshire MP Rishi Sunak has been appointed Chancellor following the resignation of Sajid Javid, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg says it's a "massive elevation" for the Richmond MP.

    She says: "A year ago he was one of the most junior ministers in the communities department.

    "A step up to chancellor this quickly is a huge ask.

    "He has not been tested in any significant way but had been seen as someone who was a reliable performer during the election campaign."

    Sajid Javid resigned after rejecting an order to fire his team of aides, saying "no self-respecting minister" could accept such a condition.

    Before his promotion, Mr Sunak was Chief Secretary to the Treasury - and just seven months ago he was a junior housing minister.

    North Yorkshire MP Rishi Sunak has been appointed as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

    Mr Sunak, Conservative MP for Richmond since 2015 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury until this promotion, has made the move following Sajid Javid's resignation.

    Mr Javid rejected an order to fire his team of aides, saying "no self-respecting minister" could accept such a condition.

    He had been due to deliver his first Budget in four weeks' time.

    A man is critically ill in hospital after he was hit by a car in Bradford.

    West Yorkshire Police said the man had suffered a serious head injury after being hit by a blue Volvo XC 60 on the A650 Shipley Airedale Road, close to its junction with Filey Street, at about 13:10 yesterday.

    Anyone who saw what happened, or who has dashcam footage of the collision, is being urged to contact police.

  6. TransPennine Express: Operator told to improvepublished at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2020

    Rail operator TransPennine Express (TPE) has been given until March to improve its performance by the team coordinating transport across the north.

    It follows a period late last year when the operator returned the worst performance figures in the country.

    Transport for the North, which advises the Government on northern England's transport needs, says TPE must now build back trust and deliver a service that's punctual and reliable.

    The transport body added that the new £500m fleet of trains are welcome with the extra capacity "much needed" but service levels must be maintained as they're brought in.

    Leo Goodwin, Managing Director for TransPennine Express said: “We absolutely agree that our customers should benefit from improved performance.

    "We have been very open about the fact that this was nowhere near good enough before Christmas and we have apologised to our customers for this."

    A man has been charged with attempted murder after another man was taken to hospital with knife wounds following an attack in Bridlington.

    The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning in Lansdowne Road.

    Humberside Police said a 46-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife in a public place in connection with the incident and is due to appear before Hull Magistrates' Court later this morning.

    A man's been arrested on suspicion on drug offences after a number of people overdosed in Hull.

    Humberside Police said the overdoses are believed to be linked to to Bensedin tablets (pictured), sometimes known as "Fatal" or "White Vallies".

    Following the overdoses, non of which were fatal, the Humberside force has issued a warning to members of the public.

    Supt Jenny Bristow said: “Inquiries are under way to establish the circumstances of these incidents.

    “One man has been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences in connection with the overdoses. He remains in our custody.

    “I would urge the public to exercise caution if they come into contact with controlled drugs, seeking medical attention immediately if they experience any unusual symptoms."

    These are the latest images of 32-year-old Natalie Jenkins, who police believe has been murdered.

    They are the most up-to-date pictures that Cleveland Police have of her.

    Natalie was last sighted on Parliament Road in Middlesbrough on 10 December and officers are trying to trace her last steps in a bid to find her.

    Det Ch Insp Mark Dimelow said: "The images we are releasing today clearly show what she looked like just a month before she went missing.

    “The images were sent to officers as a result of previous appeals and are taken from CCTV footage at a shop in Stokesley in mid-November.

    “We hope the photos provide the public with a clearer image of what Natalie looked like when she went missing in the hope that someone may come forward with information regarding any sightings of her on Tuesday the 10th or Wednesday the 11th December 2019.

    “We would urge anyone with information regarding Natalie’s whereabouts, or anyone who may have seen her on these dates to contact police as a matter of urgency. Your information could be a key piece of evidence which could assist us with our investigation.”

    Anyone with information as to Natalie’s whereabouts or anyone who may have seen her is asked to contact 101.

    Charity Crimestoppers is now offering a reward of up to £10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her suspected murder.

    A 115ft tall tower near Rotherham which dates back to the 18th Century could be repaired with a view to opening it up to the public.

    Rotherham Council is planning to spend more than £350,000 restoring the Grade II*-listed Keppel’s Column, near Thorpe Hesley.

    According to council papers, external the tower is in an extremely poor state of repair and has been on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register since 1989.

    Now the council hopes to carry out the necessary repairs in order to open it up to the public on restricted open days.

    Historic England has said it would provide 50% of the funding needed to carry out the work.

    Skipton and Ripon MP Julian Smith has become the first casualty of Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle after being sacked as Northern Ireland secretary.

    His departure comes just weeks after brokering the deal which restored the power-sharing administration in Stormont.

    Mr Smith said it had been "the biggest privilege" to serve the people of Northern Ireland and he was "extremely grateful" to have been given the chance to serve "this amazing part of our country".

    A director of a leisure centre group has denied there had been cuts to the lifeguard budget at a pool where a three-year-old boy drowned.

    Rocco Wright died after being found in the pool at the David Lloyd Club in Moortown, Leeds, in April 2018.

    A jury inquest at Wakefield Coroners' Court heard there was only one 17-year-old lifeguard on duty at the time.

    Rocco's father, Steven Wright, has previously said his son's death "should have been prevented".

    Giving evidence, David Lloyd's operations director Stephen Brown said he was surprised to hear claims about the lifeguard budget being cut at the pool.

    He told the inquest it actually went "significantly up" between 2017 and 2018.

    He was also asked whether the company had a policy of employing young lifeguards because they were cheaper.

    "Absolutely not," he told the court. "We pride ourselves on being an above minimum wage employer.

    The inquest continues.

    A woman and her three-year-old son who were among more than 80 people quarantined after returning to the UK from China are expected to be allowed home today.

    Natalie Francis, originally from York, and her son, Jamie, have been held in isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital, in the Wirral, since arriving back from Wuhan, the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak.

    All 83 people being held there have been told their final set of test results have come back negative, confirming they are free of the virus.

    When released from quarantine Ms Francis has said she intends to stay with her aunt at her home in Easingwold, North Yorkshire.

  17. 'More could have been done' for stabbed Sheffield boypublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2020

    More could have been done to support a 15-year-old Sheffield boy who was killed by another teenager, a review has found.

    Samuel Baker died after he was stabbed twice in the chest during a street fight in May 2018.

    A Sheffield Children Safeguarding Partnership (SCSP) report into his death said that he began committing crimes after being exploited by gangs.

    The report said agencies needed to find "different and better" ways to help children at risk.

    The review indentified a number of issues, including Samuel not getting bereavement counselling after the death of his older sister in a house fire.

    It also said that his repeated absences from his home and school "were not given sufficient weight".

    By the time of his death Samuel had become involved in gangs had been arrested for carrying knives and incidences of violence.

    A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, was sentenced to two years and eight months detention after pleading guilty to manslaughter at Sheffield Crown Court in October 2018.
