  2. Doncaster pupils sent home after trip to virus-hit Italypublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    A second school in Yorkshire is asking some students to stay at home after returning from a school trip to a coronavirus-hit region of Italy.

    Hall Cross Academy, in Doncaster, sent a letter to parents telling them staff and students who went on a skiing trip to northern Italy last week have been advised to self-isolate.

    The school said there were "no confirmed cases of coronavirus amongst any members of the school community" but it had taken the steps on the advice of Public Health England as a precautionary measure.

    Students who weren't on the trip have been told to attend school as normal.

    The news comes after a school in Huddersfield sent students and staff home after they went to Italy on a skiing trip, while a school in Cheshire has closed completely.

    Italy has put 11 towns in Lombardy and Veneto into lockdown.

    The main road between Snaith and Carlton has been closed due to flooding.

    Humberside Police said the road closure had been put in place after River Aire spilled its banks earlier today.

    Accoriding to traffic service Inrix the road is closed between Market Place, in Snaith, and Hepworths Lane, in Carlton.

  5. Knife-wielding man robs Goole petrol stationpublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    A staff member at a petrol station in Goole was threatened by a man wielding a knife during a robbery early this morning, police say.

    The man entered the garage, on Rawcliffe Road, at about 05:30 and demanded money from the cashier while threatening a staff member with the weapon.

    Police are now asking for people who may have seen anything or who has dash cam footage from the area between 05:00 and 06:00 this morning to get in touch.

    A cordon will remain in place at the garage until forensic tests and initial inquiries are completed, officers add.

    Labour MP John Healey has given his backing to North Yorkshire MP Rishi Sunak after an image of the newly-appointed Chancellor prompted a backlash against Yorkshire Tea.

    Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Conservative MP for Richmond, posted a picture on social media on Friday showing him making a huge tea round for his Treasury staff.

    The Twitter image led to calls by some on the left for a boycott of the brand.

    In response, the Wentworth and Dearne Labour MP posted this tweet:

  7. Man dies after crashing on Elland Bridgepublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    A man has died after crashing his car into a wall in West Yorkshire.

    The man, in his 40s, was driving a blue VW Golf when it hit and lamppost then the wall at the Halifax Road end of Elland Bridge, in Elland, shortly before 05:00.

    West Yorkshire Police said he received medical treatment at the scene but but was pronounced dead a short time later.

    The force has appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

  8. Melting snow prompts flood defence plans south of Yorkpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    The Environment Agency (EA) says it's trying to assess the impact of yesterday's snow on already flooded villages along the banks of the River Ouse south of York.

    The river is currently 4.32m above its normal level in York and is expected to peak at 4.7m at 05:00 tomorrow.

    That level in York means there is a higher risk of flooding downstream from the city, at villages such as Naburn, Acaster Selby and Cawood (pictured above).

    Frank Deplanter, from the EA, says: "Cawood Ings is filling up quickly and nearby Kellfield Ings is now absolutely rammed full of water.

    "What we're trying to establish is what's the impact of the snow melt yesterday.

    "If it comes through York and goes onto Cawood, with the influence of the spring tide coming the other way, what's it going to do there? So, we need to plan just in case."

  9. New plaque marks site of former Sheffield toy shop 'icon'published at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    A special plaque has been unveiled on the site of a former Sheffield toy shop which became a much-loved city landmark.

    Redgates, which was on Furnival Gate, was demolished two years ago to make way for regeneration in the city centre.

    An H&M clothes shop now sits on the site, but after a campaign by former worker Maggie Nunn, the owners of the new building agreed to place a plaque in memory of the former toy shop.

    She said: "It was an icon. It was a shop that brought so much pleasure to children. It was like a big playground.

    "That's why I'm here today, because I feel it should be remembered. I'm very proud."

    More than 20 children and staff from a Huddersfield school have gone into self-isolation after returning from a skiing trip in northern Italy.

    The group - 19 pupils and four members of staff - from Salendine Nook High School Academy returned from their trip via Milan airport on Saturday.

    Italy is now the European country worst affected by coronavirus with 11 towns cordoned off.

    In a message on the school website , externalprincipal Darren Christian said all 23 people had been sent home as a "precautionary measure" on the advice of Public Health England in order to complete a two-week self isolation period.

    The pupils and staff are not expected to return to school until 9 March.

  11. Newport sorry over Bradford City fire disaster 'abuse'published at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    Newport County have apologised after fans allegedly mocked Bradford City over the 1985 Valley Parade fire tragedy in which 56 people died.

    The Bantams have also complained to the Football Association about alleged abusive behaviour towards boss Stuart McCall during their loss in Newport.

    McCall's father was badly burned in the fire.

    Bradford say Newport chiefs have told them Gwent Police are investigating alleged 'repulsive chanting'.

    The disaster took place on 11 May, 1985 when the main stand burned down after what was thought to be a dropped cigarette led to flames which engulfed the entire wooden structure.

    In their response,, external Newport apologised and pledged "appropriate action" will be taken against "those identified" for their involvement.

    "NCAFC would like to apologise unreservedly to Bradford City AFC and more so Stuart McCall for the unsavoury actions towards Stuart at Rodney Parade on Saturday," the club said.

    This is the scene in the village of Hirst Courtney, near Selby, today, where about 20 houses now have river water seeping into their homes.

    Russ Wagstaff from the Parish Council says: "We've never encountered anything like this before.

    "The devastating effect on people's houses and livelihoods is immeasurable, people are now at their wits' end.

    "The entire village to the south side of the main road is fast becoming under water."

    The water from the the River Aire at Hirst Courtney is tidal and is currently at high tide.

    Mr Wagstaff says: "We're expecting an even higher tide this evening at about 22:00."

    The Environment Agency says: "Property flooding is expected in Hirst Courtney through today, with river levels expected to remain high for the next few days."

    Beverley-born Edmund, 25, who won the New York Open earlier in February, beat the 38-year-old Spaniard 6-4 6-1 in Acapulco.

    Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who represents the North Yorkshire seat of Richmond, posted a picture on Friday of him appearing to make a huge tea round for his Treasury staff.

    The Twitter image led to calls by some on the left for a boycott of the brand.

    The company said it had been "pretty shocked" by the outcry, reminding people that Jeremy Corbyn had also posed with its products in 2017.

    More than 30 flood warnings are in place across Yorkshire this morning following yesterday's rain and snow.

    The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 24 flood warnings covering North Yorkshire, seven in West Yorkshire and one in East Yorkshire., external

    The EA says the level on the River Ouse in York, which is currently 4.3m above its normal level, has started to fall, but is expected to peak again tomorrow at 4.7m.

    Frank Deplanter from the EA says flood defences are protecting about 2,000 properties in York.

    Meanwhile EA staff have been out this morning deploying sandbags at Hirst Courtney, near Selby, (pictured below) to protect properties.

    Police officers say they are "extremely concerned" for an 18-year-old girl who's been reported missing overnight.

    Lucy Freeman was last seen by friends at 01:00 this morning in the Newland Avenue area of Hull.

    She is described as a white female of slim build, 5'6" in height, with long, mousy brown hair.

    Anybody who has seen Lucy, or knows where she might be, is asked to get in touch with Humberside Police on 101.
