The trackside seating area at Thornes Park Stadium in Wakefield was deliberately set on fire at about 19:25 on Wednesday 26 February.

The blaze then spread to a nearby building where a children's sports club event was being held.

Police said it was a "deplorable case of anti-social behaviour".

Wakefield Council now says work over the next three months will involve a "substantial clean-up and initial repairs" to areas damaged in the fire.

The blaze caused "significant damage to one side of the building, affecting the changing rooms, the gym space and other facilities", officials say.

Councillor Jacquie Speight said: “It's very upsetting to see the damage caused by the fire at Thornes Park.

"It's a much-loved facility for the local community and we're doing all we can to support those affected."

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said officers were following a "number of active lines of inquiries".

It's asking for as many volunteers as possible to turn up today to help out from 13:00 onwards.

A JustGiving page set up to raise £12,000 has so far reached a total of about £7,500.
