Tadcaster Albion, on the banks of the River Wharfe, launched an appeal following what it estimated was £42,000 worth of damage caused by recent storms which left the pitch under 1.6m of water.

Water levels have gone down now - pictured (above and below left), compared to the situation at the height of the flooding (above and below right) - and the club says work on the stadium's exterior is due to begin this Friday.

The club's asking for as many volunteers as possible to turn up and help out from 13:00 onwards.

Dan Eaton, a teacher at Loxley Primary and freelance archaeologist, said he has proof the outlaw – also known as Robin of Loxley – was born at Little Haggas Croft.

Other researchers have previously pinpointed the spot as the birthplace of the legend before, but Mr Eaton says he is the first to have access to the site, allowing him to shed new light on the mystery of who the folk hero really was.

Mr Eaton, a lifelong Robin Hood fan born and bred in Sheffield, joined the school – which uses the archer as its logo and has a statue of him in the playground - three years ago.

He came across a large marker stone with a cross carved into it standing in the middle of the woodland, just steps away from a dense area of ancient holly bushes, which he said immediately reminded him of early records of the outlaw.

Mr Eaton said: "Here in Loxley it’s always just been, 'Robin Hood came from here'. I think it’s trying to make people realise this is a global phenomenon.

"It’s not just something that’s important for us in Loxley but it’s something we should really be celebrating and be extremely proud of as a community."

Robin Hood is known worldwide and his adventures have provided muse for countless books, plays and films over hundreds of years.

"So it's always been at the top of our risk register that we might have to deal with this scenario."

The latest case in York, which follows two diagnosed in the city at the end of January, is believed to have been as a result of travelling to northern Italy.

The UK has seen its biggest day-on-day increase in coronavirus cases, bringing the total number to 87.

The Owls lost 1-0 to holders Manchester City at Hillsborough last night, knocking the Championship side out of the competition.

Up until Sergio Aguero found the net with a strong left-foot finish, City had been frustrated by a stubborn Wednesday defensive performance.

Wednesday boss Garry Monk said: "In terms of the gameplan, we had the competitiveness of what we needed to do and the concentration needed. The players did exactly what I asked them to do and delivered it at a very good level.

"But I've said it all along, when these players follow a gameplan with that level of commitment and attitude - that's why we were third at Christmas.

"We've come off that in the last 10 games or so. We need to get back to that, but tonight hopefully gives the players the confidence to go and do that in the remaining games."
