A sport and leisure centre in Halifax has been closed down with immediate effect due to "serious site safety issues", according to Calderdale Council.
The Threeways sports centre and gym, on Nursery Lane in Ovenden, was closed this morning while the council checks the building and equipment safety.
In a statement, the council said it had taken over direct management of the whole site, which also includes social enterprises, small businesses, a church and a GP surgery, "to ensure it's safe for everyone to use".
The buildings at the site, which is the former Ridings School and which was leased to a community group in 2013, are "ageing and deteriorating", according to Calderdale Council.
The authority added it "had no option to bring the lease with the centre to an end".
Mark Thompson, Calderdale Council's director of regeneration, said: "We are working hard to secure a sustainable future for the site and we are providing support to tenants and their employees, as we appreciate this is a difficult time."
A post on the Threeways Facebook page said: "We are deeply disappointed that the council have moved in the manner in which they have."
