The Ryedale and Richmondshire local authority areas of North Yorkshire are among those with the highest average CO2 emissions per household across England and Wales, figures show.
The findings are part of data analysed by the BBC which shows that nearly two thirds of UK homes fail to meet long-term energy efficiency targets.
More than 12 million homes fall below the C grade on Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) graded from A-G.
It means householders spend more on energy bills and pump tonnes more CO2 into the atmosphere than necessary.

The top 10 of local authority areas with the highest CO2 emissions, which includes Ryedale in the number three position and Richmondshire at number seven, are all rural areas.

A card that can be carried by people on the autistic spectrum to tell police of their condition has been launched in South Yorkshire.
The Autism Alert Card will inform officers that the person carrying it may be autistic or have a similar neurological condition.
South Yorkshire Police officers can then help deal with the situation in a different, less-stressful way.
It's because autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently which could lead to someone being perceived by police as being unhelpful, non-responsive or difficult in pressured situations.
The cards briefly explain that the carrier isn't being deliberately awkward, and can also show the contact details of someone who can help, especially handy for staff in emergency and health services.
