    Police in South Yorkshire say they're "out in force today" after two officers "were assaulted and threatened with Covid-19".

    The force said "be assured, threats and assaults will not stop our officers from protecting the public".

    It also asked residents to "please listen to the officers and reminded people "only essential shopping needs to be done".

    On Thursday he Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales warned ,anyone who coughs on key workers as a threat amid the coronavirus crisis will face serious criminal charges.

    The deputy leader of Scarborough Council says she's hoping for a "miserable, wet and windy" weekend so people stay clear of the town's beaches.

    Liz Colling said she hopes there's no repeat of the scenes last weekend when people flocked to the seaside despite being warned to stay at home.

    “Stay home, save lives,” she said.

    “I want the weather to be wet, windy and cold, a miserable weekend so that people stay home and keep themselves and others safe.

    "I believe North Yorkshire Police will be doing checks on the A64 to stop people coming in, but my thinking is that if you have to drive to the beach to exercise then is that really local to you?

    “Exercise in your local area, stay at home and you will save lives.”

    North Yorkshire Police has also urged people not to visit popular locations in the county for exercise.

    Humberside Police has said it isn't operating vehicle stop checks after a woman was pulled over and 'fined' by two men appearing to be officials.

    The woman was flagged down by two men, who were both dressed in black zip up hoodies, carrying walkie talkies and wearing ear pieces.

    They asked the woman where she was going and if the journey was essential before demanding she paid a £60 'fine'.

    The woman refused and two men got back into their car and drove away.

    It happened on the Leven bypass near Brandesburton, East Yorkshire at about 09:25 this morning.

    Police say they're not routinely stopping any vehicles and that we do not have any stop check areas in place.

    A further five people have died at hospitals in Yorkshire after testing positive for coronavirus, according to the latest NHS figures.

    In total 759 people diagnosed with the virus have now died across the UK, with 14,579 people testing positive for the disease.

    The deaths happened in hospitals in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, Sheffield, York and at a Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust.

    Kirsten Major, from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said since 17 March ten people have died at hospitals in the city.

    "The families of these patients have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this very difficult time."

    A 26-year-old man who died after being found unconscious in Sheffield city centre earlier this week has been named by police.

    Xiangyu Li was found at the junction of Union Street and Charles Street on Tuesday at about 03:30.

    Paramedics attempted resuscitation but he died at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said.

    A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Frankfurt, Germany, on Wednesday under a European arrest warrant and remains in custody there, the force said.

    Police in North Yorkshire are calling on people not to travel to popular countryside locations for exercise or any other non-essential reason.

    Chf Insp Ed Haywood-Noble, said: “In particular, do not arrange to meet up with family or friends - take your exercise near your home, with members of your household instead.

    “And whether you’re in a car or on a motorcycle, do not go out ‘just for a drive’ or a ride in the countryside - if you break down, or have a crash you're putting lives at risk."

    This weekend, officers will be stopping vehicles and asking motorists where they're going, why they are going there, and reminding them of the message to "stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives".

    The van was parked on Hazlebarrow Road in Jordanthorpe just after 18:00 when the damage was done, police say.

    Two men on an electric-powered bike are wanted by police in connection with the incident.

    Supt Cherie Buttle said: "Our officers are working harder than ever to carry out their duties and keep the public safe and this is completely unacceptable behaviour.

    "Frontline officers were attending an incident when their vehicle was targeted by vandals, it meant we had to deploy extra resources which is unnecessary and a waste of officer time."

    East Yorkshire Buses are appealing to passengers to use contactless payments whenever possible, to reduce the risk of the virus being passed on through handling cash.

    The hope is that by reducing the contact between passengers, notes and coins and the driver, the virus is less likely to spread.

    In addition to the new measures, passengers will be asked not to occupy the seats near the driver.

    A new, reduced timetable will come into force from first thing Monday morning, but the frequency of service on key routes will be maintained, it said.

    A York MP says she fears some self-employed people will be forced to continue working during the coronavirus outbreak while they wait for financial help from the government.

    On Thursday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that self-employed workers can apply for a grant worth 80% of their earnings to help with the financial impact of coronavirus.

    The money - up to a maximum of £2,500 a month - will be paid in a single lump sum, but will not begin to arrive until the start of June at the earliest.

    Shadow Secretary of State for Employment Rights, Rachel Maskell, said:"This long awaited package isn't going to pay the bills this week, next month or even the month after.

    "So while we welcome money being set apart we're really concerned people are going to be left in poverty."

    Ms Maskell says she fears people will still go out to work "putting their lives and other's lives at risk because they'll have no choice."

    Retired rail workers are being asked to consider coming back to work to help keep the railways running during the coronavirus crisis.

    Network Rail is appealing to former signallers to help man signal boxes and control centres and it looks to provide crucial cover for members of the workforce who may need to self-isolate.

    Chris Gee, Head of Operations (Eastern Region) for Network Rail, said: “We are working hard to keep vital services, which get key workers to their jobs and food and medical supplies across the country, moving.

    “We are appealing for signallers who’ve retired, moved on to other careers at Network Rail or left the railway to come back and help us keep signal boxes and control centres open.

    “Signallers are crucial to keep the railway open and we need more former workers to help us provide back-up if some of our staff can’t come to work. Full re-training will be given.”

    The NHS says going to give blood is essential and people should, where possible, keep going to appointments.

    "We need people to keep donating as normal", an appeal said.

    "We have extra safety measures in place and travel to donate blood is essential for the NHS.

    "Our blood donor sessions and donor centres are open and our staff are taking special measures to provide a clean and safe space for you to donate."
