Earlier this week, the 67 affected nursing associates were told they could either leave the trust or take up another role on a lower salary.

The move could have seen students take a pay cut of about £1,700 a year.

In a letter to the students, Deputy Chief Nurse Karen Jessop said the pandemic had led the trust to "urgently review its current workforce and capacity in order to prepare for and try to meet the forthcoming demand which is likely to be immense".

However, the trust has now apologised and said they're reversing their decision.

In a statement it said: "We are very sorry that we informed a new cohort of Trainee Nurse Associates that they could lose pay as a result of their training having to be paused due to COVID -19 and closure of the Universities.

"The information we gave had not taken account of the exceptional circumstances we are currently in and we can only apologise for this and any upset it has caused.

"We will be addressing the issue and there will be no loss in pay."

The Labour MP for Barnsley Central, who is also mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said a "number of businesses" in the region "continue to operate unsafe working practices".

He said: "Coronavirus is going to dominate our way of life for the weeks and months ahead, so for everyone's safety, it's vital we look after workers making sure communities have the supplies they need.

"The government must provide clear guidance about the required social distancing practices. They must ensure they are implemented and take tough action where rules are broken."

Mr Jarvis said he had been working with trade unions and local authorities to protect workers' safety.

He has written to the Secretary of State for Business, Alok Sharma, asking for clearer guidance and enforcement of social distancing rules where businesses continue to operate.

  19. Police warning after driver clocked doing 132mphpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 2 April 2020

Police are urging motorists to obey the laws of the road after a driver was seen doing more than 130mph on a North Yorkshire road.

    A police officer's jacket

The driver was seen by a safety camera operator on the A168 travelling at 132mph earlier this week.

North Yorkshire Police say it comes amid a rise in dangerous, highly-excessive speeds as roads get quieter because of the coronavirus lockdown.

A driver was stopped by another force a short time later and was reported on suspicion of exceeding the speed limit.

Andy Tooke, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "Some of the speeds we have recorded as the roads have got quieter are frankly ridiculous, especially at a time when people have been asked to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.

"It’s unbelievable that some motorists are behaving in a way that puts more lives in danger at a time when NHS and emergency service resources are so vital.

"We will not tolerate North Yorkshire being used as a racetrack, and we are continuing to target those who put lives at risk by driving illegally."
